The Sam Bush set

Well, I’m surprised no one else has started a thread on this so I guess I’ll have to do it. Was it just me or was that one of the BEST Sam Bush sets I’ve ever seen/heard?? Most of my crew thought it was particularly outstanding. The cover of the Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” with Johnny C helping out was frigging awesome…until my friend Cindy said “Who’s that lady?” and I spent the rest of the song berating her. Then when Chris Thile flipped off Sam (playfully) after that raging electric mando solo. Many other moments too. Feel free to add on.

“Who’s that lady?” LOL! I was amazed by how many around me said the same thing. Also when the house band took the stage and one guy looked at me and said “now who are these guys”. CRAZY!

Gimmie Shelter just floored me …Man I gotta have that set !!!
:cheers

Holy Snikes! Saturday night in the Park listening to Sammy :medal

Thanks Beru, Cindy, Flagstaff Jess, Hooch, Dark Star Doug, others for the camraderie during that set!

I want the entire weekend on mp3! Where to find such a thing??

I had my “special” Pastor Mustard/Fred Shellman jockstrap on. It makes me sing higher than usual.

FINALLY! I knew you’d start this thread, so I waited… and waited… :rolleyes

By far, the best Sammy set I have seen E-V-E-R. Still glowing… and now stalking Tapers.

Rockygrass is going to explode…

Maybe you and Maggie should do some duets! Just kidding John, but she did kinda steal YOUR show! :dog :dog :dog (just kidding about that too) So glad you were able to join in again this year and grace us with your most awesome voice.

I saw you right after Jen, you were in fact glowing…and yeah RG is going to explode sending festiplumes all over the place :sunshine

I spent Sammy’s set running back and forth between the Fishbone crew, the Tiki crew and the Run-a-muckers. I danced and scurried all over the place. I have never felt such love bathed in such music. That was the highlight for me for sure…

And then hovering at the very front for Gaelic Storm made that night just about more than I could take in.

Thanks to the Planet for yet another amazing year. But more importantly thanks to my festie family for taking me in a couple years ago and making me a part of this amazing community. We are the richest people in the world!

Here’s to us! :cheers

Um…ouch :eek

Great job John! :cheers

Phusion,

I captured the KOTO stream of many of the sets, including the Sam Bush set. The problem is that occasionally the stream would “time out” (or whatever you call the digital gag), and then itunes woudl start playing the next thing on my music list, and I would have to be actively listening to catch it and correct it. So a bunch of the sets have some interruptions on it. They are far from perfect.

So I wonder if some other people might have cleaner overall sources. Also, I’m kind of waiting to see what the consensus is regarding sharing these mp3 recordings, as KOTO or PB might not want them out there, and taper purists probably hate the idea of MP3s.

Were there lots of tapers at the fest? They might be willing to share better sources if you are patient.

If you’re desperate for a fix message me personally.

I saw Sam Bush in 1998 or 1999 (it was great, memory is fading as to the details) and it made me a Sam Bush fan for life. I liked him before, but the set was perfect.

With his current band I saw him in Ft. Collins at benefit for a small crowd that I ranked as “the” performance I’ve seen. And I’ve seen the current band 10-20 times. I don’t keep count, but I have seen them in 5 states and was awed. Maybe because I was standing 25 feet from Chris Brown.

But the Telluride set in 2009 I think could have out done them both. David Bryne has nothing on Sam Bush. If it is not the best set I’ve heard by anybody period, it’s the best set I remember.

I hope they bring him back again.

That set was AMAZING. I cited it as one of my favorite of the festival. When Peter Rowan joined Sam, I was officially totally floored. The encore was also something to be excited about!

Lordy, Lordy. I am getting excited for next year!

Me too! :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :thumbsup

You must have had that thing cinched up pretty tight.

…Sam Bush absolutely blue me away in 2007 so I desperately need to hear the 2009 set, patiently waiting for an upload from the tapers please!!!

I’m curious to hear your take on the 2009 set since I think the 2007 set he played is still his best in my 7 TBFs beginning in 2001 (missed 2004 and 2008). 2009 was incredible and a silver medal is awesome :medal. 2007 is my gold standard contained so many magical moments:

  • opener A Better Man
  • Same Ol River → Boogie on Reggae Woman → Same Ol River
  • WHOLE LOTTA LOVE
  • New Country!

Also most amazing…and the Gimme Shelter rendition!!!
Sam was on fire!

I’m sorry I never was able to lay eyes on “Hooch”…heard so much about your love for bacon in the pre-festival forums! I did introduce myself to the Mayor…happy to have met you!

i agree that Sam’s set was great, however, I left early and listened from afar. Maybe it was just me being grumpy but i really felt like the crowd was the rudest I had ever seen during a Sam set. What is with all the random screaming between songs? I like hearing the explanations between songs because they are the stories and the histories of all this great music. So shortly after Emmy lou had joined him, i left. It was better to hear just what was coming from the stage and not everything coming from the crowd. Why can’t we party AND also know how to let the musicians be what we hear?

Sammy’s set is always a highlight for me. Actually Sammy with anyone is always special… and I was glad that the Sunday night House band set was more politely attended than the Saturday night set. I sure don’t want to see the Saturday night behavior become the accepted culture of TBF.
