Hard for non Festivarians to understand (as much as I try to explain it to them) but for 4 days in June there is no better place to be on earth at 4AM than in the tarp line in Telluride Colorado and no better people to be found than the new ones you meet sharing open tarp space.
You all are making a ton of assumptions. Just because someone writes that enforcement would create a ‘pseudo police zone’ or whatever doesn’t make it so. As Faceonmars succinctly states, you spray/mark out a section for limited sized tarps. You create a few simple signs , such as the sandwich signs that already exist that say ‘no high backed chairs, no standing etc.’ The first year there may need to be an emcee announcement or two from the stage, and perhaps a few volunteers may have to walk up to a few Fetivarians who can’t read and nicely and calmly point out the new rule. The new rule, which by the way allows everyone to share in the experience. Not a big deal. Not a police state.
Planet Bluegrass, are you reading this? When the new rule is ‘announceed’ from stage or in the Festival program, there will be LOUD cheers from MOST of the audience.
Here’s a suggestion for Planet Bluegrass, who I know do not want to make a lot of changes, which is understandable. Perhaps the emcee can come out to the stage this year, and make the following announcement:
Well howdy folks! How bout _____? Did they set fire to the stage or what? So we have an announcement. We are thinking of creating a zone, a strip of land if you will, next year in 2013, near the front in which tarps will be limited to 8’x10’ size. What do you think?
Then you can decide, just as they do with audience response to band contests…
Can mean a lot of things, but really hadn’t really thought of it that way … which was definitely not my intent! BB: please know I’m not looking to give you a hard time (or anyone else for that matter), but just feel the way I do about a slight adjustment in tarp policy. Not saying I’m “right” either.
Maybe it’s not a perfect analogy/metaphor: but if one is waiting in the tarp line (or covertly jockeying for position) while the current day’s show is still in progress, is one not “self-cannabilizing” on that which is already present and healthy? … at what point do you sacrifice the present for the future?
Whoa, I definitely need some inspiration to get that deep right now.
I’ve never and will never miss one day’s show to get in line for the next. I know most of my crew won’t do that either. I don’t get it but hey, for those that do, well it’s their journey.
A snake eatting its own tail also symbolizes a never ending cycle in many mythologies. Seems appropriate here since this topic seems to come up every year.
Matt bout rapped up the snake image like I saw it. I still gotta bit of prompt for opening up the dining lawn over yonder there. Only way to do that is with tarps like recommended, what is the current size? 10X20 gives ample room for eight, ten tight? I suppose 8X10 is a four top. I thought the size was posted? Peeps doubling up on Shade Hs. and tarp I suppose is inevitable, as groups intermingle. Which I suppose is a good thing, keeps down the inbreeding. It’s a darn good time as it was, seems to change a little each year.
