Next years T.B.F. beer has just been brewed. :cheers Well, a 5 gallons anyway. I made an American Red lager with hops I hand picked from a neighbors fence. As with most home brewers, I love to talk beer with other brewers. So I am seeing if any other home brewers would like to have a little get together? :wave I usually stay out at Mary E. Illium, and plan on being there by Tuesday late afternoon. :thumbsup
I’m in! I’m going to start brewing for the festival in February or so. I’m going to be trying my hand at some lagers now that I have ample refrigeration space. I’ll be in Warner, but we should get together in town and trade some brews!
I thought it would be cool to have a homebrewers exchange tent somewhere, if something like that isn’t done already, and would be within the rules.
The Home brewers exchange tent sounds like a good idea. :thumbsup It may be a challenge to find a good place to set it all up. If we don’t break any town rules, this could be an ongoing thing. Even if we cant get that put together, I would still love to trade some brew’s. I may even bring some mead, I have some that will be 4yrs old by then. :cheers Just for trading purposes, I pretty well stick with 22oz bottles. This could be allot of fun piled on top of one of the best weekends of my year. :lol Let’s get something put together.
We have had a homebrew tasting event in Town Park for quite a few years, but it didn’t happen last year due to many brewers missing out in the lottery.
In addition, it’s a burden on the hosting camp to put it together.
We’ll have to see if one of the camps is willing to host a return of the event before the festival starts.
Otherwise it would be up to local town laws/rules and agreement between them and Planet Bluegrass on where/how it could be implemented.
The other option would be one of the local pubs putting together such an event with the help of festivarians.
Local comments? :cheers
I would volunteer to host at my camp sight. :cheers Only hitch, is I camp out at Mary E. But if we could get one of the brew pubs to help host, I’m willing to help as much as possible. I’m the dude with the solar power set-up, so I am usually easy to find. Just look for a bunch of phones being charged. :thumbsup
It was one of my favorite events and I missed it this year. As one of the world’s youngest beer snobs, I definitely think we should get it going again.
There don’t need no stinkin’ host camp either…just pick a time that works for some, and set up @ the BM Monday Morning yard. BYOB and some OB to share? :cheers
I’m up for it! If I end up in Warner field I guess I can’t be there before Wednesday night. Is that a good time? I will bring plenty of my own to drink and plenty to share as well. I’ll try to bring an array of different flavors. What about the glass bottle issue? Can I bring…KEGS?? I’ve been kegging for a while so a few 5 gallon kegs and a small CO2 tank is very doable. One small CO2 tank will dispense many kegs if they are already carbonated, so if anyone else brings kegs I can have the CO2 covered.
Scott has a good point yet I don’t think we should mix the BM’s and the beer tasting… First off, I don’t know if those would mix well for some…Plus, I think the crowd may get way too crazy… Just set up the beer tasting in the same place at the usual time… Is it 12 on Tuesday… Everyone who wants to participate do their share- drag over tables , ez ups etc, People bring brew or snacks and their OWN cups and we just go for it…
Brewers - I just brewed up a batch of the “White House Honey Ale” that Obama was seen drinking on his campaign bus. It’s REALLY good. So good that I may try the White House Honey Porter recipe soon.
Here’s the recipe for Honey Ale:
White House Honey Ale
Ingredients
· 2 (3.3 lb) cans light malt extract
· 1 lb light dried malt extract
· 12 oz crushed amber crystal malt
· 8 oz Biscuit Malt
· 1 lb White House Honey
· 1 1/2 oz Kent Goldings Hop Pellets
· 1 1/2 oz Fuggles Hop pellets
· 2 tsp gypsum
· 1 pkg Windsor dry ale yeast
· 3/4 cup corn sugar for priming
Directions
In an 12 qt pot, steep the grains in a hop bag in 1 1/2 gallons of sterile water at 155 degrees for half an hour. Remove the grains.
Add the 2 cans of the malt extract and the dried extract and bring to a boil.
For the first flavoring, add the 1 1/2 oz Kent Goldings and 2 tsp of gypsum. Boil for 45 minutes.
For the second flavoring, add the 1/2 oz Fuggles hop pellets at the last minute of the boil.
Add the honey and boil for 5 more minutes.
Add 2 gallons chilled sterile water into the primary fermenter and add the hot wort into it. Top with more water to total 5 gallons. There is no need to strain.
Pitch yeast when wort temperature is between 70-80˚. Fill airlock halfway with water.
Ferment at 68-72˚ for about seven days.
Rack to a secondary fermenter after five days and ferment for 14 more days.
To bottle, dissolve the corn sugar into 2 pints of boiling water for 15 minutes. Pour the mixture into an empty bottling bucket. Siphon the beer from the fermenter over it. Distribute priming sugar evenly. Siphon into bottles and cap. Let sit for 2 to 3 weeks at 75˚.
I signed the Petition to get this published!!! Right at the same site that I signed a Petition to allow Texas to secede from the Union, and annex Austin back into the U.S.
Well, since I kind of got this going for this year. I am willing to help out any way I can, where ever we decide to meet.
I think a keg system would be great. My neighbors at Rockygrass last year had 4 kegs. It was fantastic! :cheers
The batch I just brewed up was kind of simple compared to CompleteJohn’s, that sounds really good by the way.
But like usual, mine is an experiment.
6lb light dry malt (Mutons)
1lb Crystal malt 80lvb
1lb light clover honey
3 1/2oz hops I have no idea what they are. They all grew together on one fence, and the guy that planted them 40 years ago is past on.
I think I picked 3 different kinds, but I’m not sure. All I know is they smell wonderful!
White Labs, Pilsner yeast.
Irish Moss
I steeped the crystal just until wort had a nice beep red color, about 30-35min
Added all the malt, honey, and 1oz hops, brought to a good boil
after 30 min I added 1 1/2oz hops for flavoring
in last 10min or so I thru in the other 1oz of hops, and Irish Moss
I am doing a two stage fermentation at about 45-50f
