There are some bars in Lyons that could definitely host some smaller-ish bands. have they ever attempted a Nightgrass in Lyons?
Onsite camping is Nightgrass on steroids. :burn
They have done Saturday night moongrass in the Wildflower.
To me the culture of RG is more about joining picks and staying up late getting tarp run numbers. a Nightgrass scenario would get in the way of that for me.
The Pizza Bar does have some late night shows if memory serves.
:cheers
TheLorax speaks truth. Though, I remember seeing a Blue Canyon Boys show at Oskar Blues during academy, so it’s certainly not out of the question. But the pickin’ during RG is off-the-hook. If you don’t play, you can easily walk around the onsite until you find a pick you enjoy and hunker down and watch.
There have been some killer MoonGrass shows in the past put on by Planet Bluegrass. They have generally been unannounced until you show up. The last couple years have been less of my cup of tea.
Here are some the in-town venues I know about with music during RockyGrass week, starting with Thursday and Friday, and I’ll try to add more as I find out! (check websites for more):
Thursday July 26 concert in Sandstone Park (free) 6:30pm: “Sally Van Meter & the True Bluegrass Band” (with former Open Road musicians Keith Reed, Caleb Roberts, and Eric Thorin from Colorado and special guest Yoseff Tucker from California) and http://www.lyonscolorado.com/events/sandstone-summer-concert-series
Thursday July 26 ($5 cover) at Oskar Blues 8-11pm: Meadow Mountain, Masontown, Lonesome Days! http://oskarbluesfooderies.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Lyons_music-schedule-JULY_for-social-01.jpg
Friday July 27 (free) at Stone Cup noon–2pm: Mark Lavengood Band http://www.thestonecup.com
Saturday July 28 ($10 cover) at Oskar Blues 9pm: In the Whale http://oskarbluesfooderies.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Lyons_music-schedule-JULY_for-social-01.jpg
Saturday July 28 (free) at Pizza Bar 66, 9:30pm-12:30am: The 89s (a supergroup of talented musicians who happen to live in Lyons: Eben Grace, Brian Schey, and Michael Thompson) https://www.facebook.com/Pizza-Bar-66-359142207293/
There should be more going on after the main stage closes down. That would be a nice change.
There’s already some of the best stuff going on after the main stage ends…campground picking, sometimes with the folks who were on stage! To me that is the golden lining of Rockygrass and it’s the heart of bluegrass. Real music being made by real people in an intimate setting.
See you tonight at Sandstone Park, tomorrow at Stone Cup and Saturday night at Pizza Bar 66. Looking forward to those bonus shows (all free).
