We are rolling up with camping passes for the High School.
Just realized camping opens Wednesday at noon for the high school - we plan to arrive Tuesday after noon… :huh
we are driving up from Denver - campsite for 1 night? Hotel /Motel /Holiday Inn? Stay in a different town on the way up?
Planning to bring a banjo and a guitar - these are safe at the campsite, right?
I’m not sure which towns are on that route but there should be something decent within an hour. We come from Phoenix and stayed in Rico last year. We plan to stay in Cortez this year, so we’ll have about a 90 minute drive up on Wed morning.
Regarding the camping safety. I’ve never worried about things at the high school. They are pretty strict with checking wristbands so only people camping there are allowed in.
I’ve camped at Lake Fork Campground (http://www.recreation.gov/camping/lake-fork-campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=74061) on the way to Telluride when we are just looking for a quick place to set up and sleep (there’s no shade, although you’re right on the water for a nice view). If you want to add a little bit to the drive but camp in gorgeous national forest, camp Owl Creek Pass. If the roads are all okay you can cut south on Cimarron Road and skip Montrose. It definitely adds a little bit of time to the drive, but it’s a gorgeous area.
