Town Park virgin? Get your answers here!

Okay…so I know some of the expert, experts are arriving well before Saturday (week before) and you must have some kind of system worked out…since there is a 7 day maximum at camp during non-festival time. :wave

If I arrive the Friday the 13th ( :() where would I hang out? In my car somewhere until landgrab Saturday?

Thanks in advance

You’ll wander from camp to camp, distorting your reality, until you decide sitting in a chair all night with a bunch of other drunks sounds like fun. Eventually, you’ll pass out, and wake up just as the land rush is happening, with the sick odor of Crunchy Frog on your breath, and Duktape residue on your wrists.

You’ve been warned.

Yes, there are only 30 official spots in the Town Park campground, but when a festival takes over, they open up the bear creek preserve (a large recreation area with a creek and lots of trees) for camping as well. That’s where most of us end up.

haha me too. I’m no stranger to camping or fests but this whole 2week campout is a little new to me. We’re discussing the possibility of taking Monday off as well. I have family in the area and tons of friends in Durango. I’m sure it will all work out! Thanks for the info!

The 30 official camping spots and the primitive area (another section of Town Park) will hold 200 to 300 people, with the remaining 900 to 1000 camping in the Bear Creek Preserve.

It does get tight in some areas by the day before festival, but there’s always a small patch of land where you can pitch a tent.

Some people get so desperate for land they camp right behind the porta-johns (not something I’d do) but you’ll find space by looking around and talking to prospective neighbors.

We’re all a friendly bunch so don’t hesitate to come up to us and talk or ask questions. :flower

Except Duktape Man. Well, he just might be a little too friendly, if y’know what I mean

Okay…now that you have explained Bear Creek Reserve…reserved for all you FestiBearians it is making much more sense. :thumbsup

I have plenty of time off from work, but, still unclear what you “experts” do on that Friday night before Saturday land grab…which in itself sounds daunting. I envision people running amok (pun intended) establishing coveted territory. And is it true that spots are saved for old timers that have not arrived yet and you could potentially be a squatter and not realize it?

Just asking! :flower

It does happen, but if you’re willing to become a foot slave, these things have a way of working themselves out.

There’s very little that can’t be worked out over a pedicure.

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol!!!

Okay…I am willing to offer my feet up for a pedicure not a problem. Tee Hee!

Friday night last year encompassed lots of wandering around, seeing good friends for the first time since last year and partying. That night, people will frequently sleep in their cars or under a friends sunshade. Last year, I slept under a tree, and I was a cripple.

As far as Bear Creek Preserve goes, there is no saving of spaces for veteran campers until the land rush at 8:00 AM Saturday the 14th. Just take your time Saturday morning and you won’t squat on an old timers plot. :flower
Talk to your prospective neighbors to see if you’re trying to set up in a pathway or living room area of another camp and you’ll do fine.
The Park and Recreation people pretty much give up Town Park to people coming in Friday afternoon after 2:00 or 3:00 so ask around where you can plop yourself down for the night. :flower
It does get pretty hectic Saturday with everyone trying to unload and move cars, so be prepared to get out of the way. :lol

Telluride Tom:

As the mayor of the fair town park…if you are allowed in around 3 pm on Friday…are you parking your car at Town Park until you have to move it on Saturday? And I guess you are just temporarily somewhere in the Park until they officially open camping in Bear Creek Saturday morning? So only partially unloading your stuff Friday night until you secure permanent dwelling Saturday morning?

Thanks for the help!!

pm sent… :cheers

In fact, we can make some plans to make sure you’re all set.

Thanks everybody for all the help. Look forward to meeting the Expertvarians. :medal

I will have foot salve available for my foot slave…whoever that turns out to be. Not bringing my own.

And as my mind conjures and ponders more questions: Will Camp Duc(t) tape have electricity available? Like an actual plug outlet? A girl needs certain beauty treatments even when camping.

Kamp Duktape would like to welcome it’s newest Festi-virgin, AlohaGirl! :medal :cheers :flower

Yes, we have a solar-powered electricity set-up (mostly 12v but some 110v), but not enough for high wattage items like blow dryers or curling irons - there are electric outlets for those kinds of things in the bath house. We can keep your phone or tablet fully charged, re-charge your camera battery, maybe recharge your laptop, and take care of other low voltage needs. We have no microwaves or popcorn poppers, but we’ll have lots of LED’s and we will definitely be Totally Lit all week!

Hooray! We get a Virgin this year! :clap

See you soon, AlohaGirl :hug

Sounds like a sacrifice is lurking! :rolleyes

The sacrifice is probably the least of your worries. I hope Bevin explained to you the imminent peril that your adult beverages face from the likes of Duk Tape Man and his mighty steed, Blaze.

Not since Butch and Sundance has such a reign of terror been unleashed in the box canyon. Heaven help us all if they get a sniff of your Tecate.

I’ve probably said too much- repercussions for my disclosures are guaranteed. A great time will be had…as long as you’re mindful of the man in Duk Tape.

Hello Expertvarians!
I have been gettin’ a kick out of reading the latest posts from this stream.
The packing list was most helpful - thank you!
I’m a TBF virgin with TP camping coming all by myself from Olympia, WA this year.
I am a little nervous to be coming by myself, but thanks to the tips on this forum, I feel much better prepared. I’m going to follow all of your advice and show up on Friday night so that I can hopefully get to know some people (hopefully expertvarians!), who can tell me how to go about finding a decent spot on Saturday that will not be in anyone’s way, but will still be a good/fun place.
I just had a couple of questions that I know that I saw, but cannot find again on this forum (I am sorry if I am repeating!):
How many quarters do you need for a shower and how long of a shower do you get?
Can you have glass bottles of beer in TP camping (I know not in the festival)?
Can you leave all of your things safely in your tent when you’re out 'n about exploring?
I think I have the basics - I am kind, sharing, respectful, and fun (I think) - can anyone tell me how to make a couple of friends on Friday night, or should I just wander?
Thank you!
I CANT WAIT!!! :cheers
