My 13 year old daughter wants to get into the academy lottery for fiddle. She can play, and her teacher (the guy who won the dobro contest this past year) is convinced she’ll be totally bored in the kids academy.
Is it possible for her to be placed into the adult academy? She will still be 13 next Summer. She would be happy to audition. She probably knows 25 bluegrass songs, chords and melody; she can chop, too.
Do they allow that sort of thing? How would I make it happen?
Thanks.
My just turned 14 year old son was in the novice guitar this year after 2 years in the kids academy. He was just fine. She will love the adult academy and will not feel intimidated at all. She sounds ready for novice for sure. The experience is awesome. Sign her up through the lottery in November. Good luck. If you have any questions let me know. She will be happier being challenged in the adult academy.

Thank you. I was beginning to think I had committed some sort of banish-able offense. I am applying myself, so I think we’ll just apply for her as well, and see what happens.
She is no prodigy, but she works hard, and she has a good ear. She learns pretty quickly, so I think she’ll be okay.
Plus, I mean no offense at all to the kids academy teachers, but it would be even cooler for her to work with a “famous” player for a week.
Yeah, seeing my son sitting next to Sandy Munroe, Uwe Krueger and Bryan Sutton was pretty awesome for me. It is a great experience
Take it easy,
Pat
Once at Academy and she finds that the class she is enrolled in is not challenging enough, she has the ability to move, never fear.
No tryouts, however the Band Scramble, which she must sign up for each day is a good way for her to shine and show others what she can do in a band setting. Very fun. Now I’m getting excited.
Lucky girl!!! :flower
My kid is nine… I took this vid of her this week…
She picked out this fiddle tune and learned in less then a week.

I realize that she is young… but I think that she might be bored in the kids camp. She comes to jams with me all the time, and can do all sorts of fiddle tunes and takes breaks and stuff.
Anybody have thoughts on whether or not she might hang in the novice or intermediate guitar classes? She’s dying to try…
Scody,
As long as she knows and can change chords comfortably and is familiar with melody and knows a few songs she will be set for novice. She sounds good btw.
The kids academy can be challenging and fun. There will be other kids her age their and the instructors have been great.
Seems to me she would have a great experience either way. She will love to slow and fast jam tents.
Good luck,
Pat
I was in the Novice Guitar Class this last Summer and there were a few younger folk in our class ~ definitely more challenging for them, as I could not see them in the kids class at all ~ Hey Pat :wave
