I’m sure there are a million tarp run threads around here, but i couldn’t find one so lemme just throw out a question. How much room is there for dancing up close to the stage at tbf? If we dont do the tarp run, are we doomed to the way back?
I’m a newb to both tride and rockygrass this year, and read some kinda disturbing posts from RG folks who weren’t thrilled with the line-lotto/tarp run setup there, even calling for abolishment! Also that there isnt much room to stand up and dance. Sounds like people may even get downright pissy about it if u were to do so up front. I’m sure the tride scene is a different crowd from lyons tho…possibly even downright rowdy?! :rock
Can anyone who’s been to both tell me if that’s correct, and how it compares to TBF?
My usual style would be to pack light: up front groovin away, or takin a beverage break in the back… not so much chillin/sitting by the stage. As such i dont think the tarp seating would be for me? Not that it doesn’t sound like a perfectly decent festivarian tradition, and a fantastic idea if your knees have seen a few too many moguls :flower Thoughts?
There are some areas off to the sides of the stage up front where you can get your groove on, and there’s also the dancing area behind the soundboard.
In general, during the day that’s where the dancing goes on (or in the back, or in the hooping pit). Generally if you stand up and shake it for a bit during an act, nobody is going to say boo to you, but there’s definitely no standing/dancing directly in front of the stage during the day, and it’s sort of expected if someone (politely) asks you to move it or sit down, you’ll cooperate.
At night the rules change. Tarps come up, the crowd pushes forward, and you may find yourself right against the poseur pit fence. Anywhere you can find the real estate to shake your thang is just fine after dark.
Keep in mind, most of us are lucky if we can survive the long stretch of intense mountain sunshine during the day, even sitting still. These days of music are serious marathons, and even if the knees are healthy, we aren’t as young as we used to be, and need to pace ourselves.

Re pacing yourself: I’m gonna pretend that I can party through a whole fest still :hop even if its wishful thinking! At the least those days are probly getting numbered for me too :rolleyes Of course full respect for people layin low during the day and not wrecking their time. Coming from lower areas it can be pretty breathtaking - literally! I’m still planning on shaking it till it falls off tho!
Marathon wins require relaxation while covering ground…that zone where your core is churning but your brain and extremities are on cruise control. Kinda like falling asleep in a lawn chair listening to elephant revival!
At Rockygrass they won’t let you dance on your tarp at all. Security will ask you to sit.
In Telluride, there is no stopping the dancing when fast-ass bluegrass is on the stage, regardless of the time of day. For the mellower stuff it’s polite to sit.
Basically, if someone behind you asks you to sit, I would hope it’s the mellower stuff we are talking about.
If someone YELLS at you to sit, I would ask them to run faster next time… :concert

He is a familiar face at most of the local shows throughout the year … always grooving hard. Just saw him literally running large circles around the fire pit in the Mountain Village during the Joint Point show (who will be playing at the Llama on thursday night of bluegrass) on the last day of the ski season two weeks ago.

re. joint point @ the llama: Are there lots of local, non PB shows around town during fest? Not being pessimistic about my lotto chances, but can’t win/afford 'em all!
Just about every bar will have something going at some point … some local some not.
I’m actually kinda bummed about the stacked thursday, since I was planning on seeing Joint Point (an upbeat electrified jam band) & RRE is my first nightgrass choice … would’ve liked to have seen both, but you can’t win em all as you’ve said!

Festival week in Telluride is the show. No matter where you are or what you are doing, it will be a show unfolding before your very eyes. Relax, watch, listen, and enjoy the wonderful energy flowing about you. Telluride is magic, just accept.
I danced with this guy at TBF 2010. I commented on LOVING his moves and he said, “YouTube Me! I’m Telluride Dancing Hippie!” What a great TBF memory!
Nobody was complaining about him dancing because he was part of the great show too! We cleared out an area the size of three tarps long to allow him to sprint back and forth with great speed and intention. Sometimes when you get the dancing fever, you can’t settle it down! I applaud that kind of expression!
That’s Matt, or at least that what he told me his name is. He’s been dancing at MANY shows over the years. Maybe he said Pat and I thought he said Matt, but I’ve called him Matt for a long time and he never said it wasn’t, so who knows. But I’ve danced with him too! Great guy and fun to watch.
