sunshade question

Hi! This will be my first time at TBF and I will have my one year old in tow. I read a little about people having the little Kelty sun shades in the back row, how about a normal sun canopy? What are the rules on that? I’d really like to avoid buying something new!!!

there are all sorts of different variations back there from ez-ups to those small half-tent things. The Kelty’s just dominate the landscape since there are so many. There will be a line drawn on the field where tents/sunshades can’t go in front of. behind the line it’s pretty much whatever you want to bring in and setup.

don’t forget ear plugs!

Thank you so much! I also read about the earplugs…hoping my daughter will keep them in!!! And if she does take them out I hope she doesn’t eat them!

have your daughter use carrots!

Haha I don’t know how well carrots block out sound? Will you experiment for me? kidding.

She only has 4 teeth! She can’t even eat a carrot without supervision. Got anymore ideas?

Does the sunshade area typically fill up? I’m wondering if I need to get there by a certain time in order to assure myself the real estate to throw up a sun shade.

Thanks-
Randy

Yes, it fills up - mostly. You can arrive late and still find space for a sunshade, but you might not have a view of the stage.

The sound, on the other hand, is terrific everywhere.

the orange silicone type earplugs have worked the best for us. get em at target in the swimming aisle or at hunting stores. come in a plastic package of 6 sets so buy an extra just in case.

As said, you can still arrive late and not get a view of the stage, but I dont know if I have ever seen the whole area completely fill up. sure it has been full but there always seems to be a little room someplace especially past the port-a-let area.

If you come in late head to the left from the entrance as the area to the right in front of the food booths tends to fill up rapidly and by late Fri/Sat the dust from the area in front of the booths is everywhere.

and what about Sunshade hopping? Are they shared like the tarps?

You could use marshmellows

LOL that’s pretty clever. Might get a little sticky. I’ll probably stick to the silicone ones and try not to let her eat them! However, if all else fails, and she is ingesting them, I’ll grab some marshmellows.

sunshades do end up being shared just like the tarps. tho last year we did witness 3 guys take over a sunshade and tell the owners they werent moving when they came back. they finally got up when the people started taking everything down.

funny how many people can fit under them in the rain.

A neat trick I’ve found that works well is to use a small piece of that ‘paper tape’ over the ears after putting the earplugs in… I think it’s actually surgical tape, but hopefully you know what I mean… It holds well without sticking so bad that it pulls hair when you need to take out the earplugs… Hope the info helps! :flower

That is brilliant! Surgical tape or like…paint tape comes off pretty easily too. Definitely something like that would probably help a lot unless the earplug is popping out of her ear too much. I need to go get ear plugs and tape now and experiment. Maybe get her used to them before the FESTIVAL! (so excited)

I think they supply tape at the first aid tent for putting on baby ear plugs…

There is also a wax type ear plus that you can buy that mold totally to the ear so it will not be sticking out so less chance , she will pull it once covered in tape… Plus, you can make as small as you need.

We used bandaids to cover the earplugs, worked great

Or … you can get something like in the attached photo

The orange silicone types you don’t really need tape over them to help keep them in as they’ll kind of just stick in there after you get them in right. You roll them into a ball in your palms and then kind of press/form them into the ear. It’s best to use two hands when pressing it into the ear kind of spreading it/smoothing it out till it more or less fills in the ear ‘cavity’ without actually going down into the ear canal. It seems kind of weird at first but you and they’ll get used to it if you go that route.

Not saying they never fall out, which is why extras for the extras are always good in case they get dirty, but if they do just pop it back in a spread it out a little better and it usually seems to hold.

We have a set of the headsets for kids like the photo above, but we found they just kept ripping them off since they were so heavy. Sure looks like the girl is having fun and doesn’t mind them tho!

So cute! I think Shea would rip those off. But i’m so glad to have so many ideas. I went and got the ear plugs for kids today…all they had in “kid” size at Target were some orange kid swimmer ones. I’m going to experiment later today. (Shea is passed out on my chest…aww) Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed! I would be much more stressed if I didn’t feel prepared.
