Maybe its because I will probably never see that man perform again, or that I had never seen him before Sunday, or just that he has some magic mojo in his voice, or all those reasons plus a few more, that I have to admit to crying during his set.
He moved me.
It’s been a long time since live music made me cry, with happiness.
The Bluegrass this weekend was some of the best I have seen, but Sunday morning church with King Solomon Burke was really special for me, and I am not the least bit religious.
I never knew my real Dad and when he talked about being a father it really tore me up. What a powerful presence. What a truly moving performance. I love Gospel, I am spiritual and not religious.
I’ve seen Solomon Burke before – but never outdoors at 10:00 in the morning. For us, Sunday was the most amazing single day of music we’ve heard in our lives… variety, emotion, strength, imagination, honesty, hilarity, brilliance. Each Sunday set was almost the exact opposite of the set that preceeded it – I can’t articulate the brilliance of that day’s worth of music.
To these ears, Solomon Burke’s set was among THE highlights
of Tellurude 2008!! I cried also because I was so moved by
his performance and sheer presence. If you missed this set,
you missed something truly special.
