I used to go to Telluride Bluegrass Fest every year, but haven’t been in about 8 years (daughter/divorce/life). This year I am heading to RockyGrass with my daughter and some friends and am wondering if I could get some deets on the tarp run. Where to line up? How early to get in line (I won’t be getting in line until morning), so is 5 am or 6 am okay to get a decent spot? We will be camping in LaVern Johnson family camp. TIA for any veteran insights.
Howdy!

In years past, when we haven’t been able to stay up until midnight, we have gotten to the line up area (which is kinda just the whole general area where people are walking at the front gates, along that whole road) at about 7ish. Usually that is just enough time to do some bartering for extra numbers and do pretty well. Getting there at 5 or 6 am would probably increase your luck even more. Although I don’t think very many people will be there that early! I feel like I usually snag a good extra number just minutes before the tarp run starts when someone realizes they don’t need it anymore. Happy Festival!
Tarp policy has to change. Been to RG off and on for over a decade. Yesterday, I noticed so many massive tarps, vacant for the majority of the day. My fam of 4 arrived as soon as we could ~ 11am and squeezed into a 3x3’ grass square in the back, dancing and watching the tiny bands over empty tarps. Maybe increase the dance area to more than a weird sliver? Change the tarp policy Planet BG. Chairs only area? No idea. It’s just sad to see bands play to a ghost field all day. My 2 cents.
Allowable tarp size is 10x10 and that was enacted a few years ago. I saw staff folding over tarps that were too large to fit into the 10x10 space.
Also, it’s important to recognize that ‘tarp surfing’ is allowed and encouraged. If there’s an empty tarp, you are welcome to sit on it until the owner returns and heck, you might even make a new friend as a part of that!
