I was wondering if it’s kosher/feasible to ride my bike from Mary E to town on the road rather than mountain biking. I just have a hybrid so I don’t think I’d be able to handle the trail but would love to bike into town on the road or on a paved path if there is one. Anyone have any insight?
I’m also wondering if I don’t have a vehicle pass at Mary E if I have to park all the way up at Mountain Village like the website says, or if there will be parking within walking distance. Thanks!
Coming out of Mary E. to the main road into Telluride is steep, narrow and full of traffic. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone trying to ride their bike into town. Yes, there is a very nice bike path once you get closer to town, but you’d have to risk your life to get to it.
As to your second question about parking, you will be able to park your car reasonably close to the Mary E. campsite. You will not need to park way up in Mountain Village. But be aware that once you park near Mary E., you should plan to just leave your car there and ride the shuttle busses in to town.
Unless you are a very experience mountain highway road bicyclist, I would not do it! Yes, it’s possible, about a 7 mile ride up hill in both directions, no shoulder, trucks making deliveries, and tons of car and RV tourist traffic not to mention one of the biggest bluegrass festivals going on causing extra traffic!
