The state of the Bluegrass Union is good! There were 6 bands that played DelFest that will also be playing Telluride and they all absolutely just tore it up! I was lucky to see 2 full sets from Greensky and Steep Canyon Rangers, and full sets from Hot Rize, Trampled by Turtles, Lake Street Dive, and Leftover Salmon. Just mind blowing how good all of these shows were. Highlights for me were Greensky opening with Eyes of the World, Trampled by Turtles encore of Hallelujah and Brown Eyed Women, and Salmon with Rag Mama Rag and Tim O’Brien joining in for a prolonged Man Gave Names to All the Animals. Steep Canyon Rangers just keep getting better and more versatile year after year. Hot Rize still has that silky smooth bluegrass sound, immensely talented. First time seeing Lake Street Dive and I really enjoyed their sound and their enthusiasm.
And in case anyone was wondering Scuppers had a grand time at DelFest 2015. Here’s a Scuppers selfie with Eddie from Ohio.
I’m excited for more of Lake Street Dive. They opened for Grace Potter at Red Rocks last year and I really enjoyed it. The singer came out and did a bone chilling Wild Horses with Grace. Chills just thinking about it! Here is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RE5KMn2lobc
Side note: I wish Grace would play Telluride as the rock/non-bluegrass act. What an amazingly talented, yet humble person. I think she embodies the spirit of TBF.
Wow! Thanks for sharing that Philly Girl, that was great and the audience was certainly into it. Was really looking forward to Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers and to Lake Street Dive at DelFest but Lake Street Dive really did a lot more for me. Rachel Price has a killer voice and range and loved the band especially the bass player. I’m a big fan now and so looking forward to catching them again at Telluride, WooHoo!
She’s VERY talented and definitely would be the best looking lady at TBF, but with the new direction she has taken her music, it just wouldn’t work. She is beginning to sell out, trying to expand her “brand”.
It appears the rock/non-bluegrass slot is MIA this year … especially considering that Rowns’ (T&G) set will be in the running for having the hardest edge.
