Pre-Festy Mountaineering?

Anyone interested in knocking out one of these 14’ers or 13’ers near town early Wednesday morning? Even Thurs Morning? Hoping for Mt. Wilson or really open to any sort of climbing suggestions. I really just want to get on top of something tall.

:thumbsup

Sounds awesome! Make sure to bring snow gear as there is still a lot of snow up over 10,000 feet right now. My group is staying in Ridgway this weekend and are going to attempt Courthouse Mountain (12,152) in the Cimarrons on Owl Creek Pass - will have a better idea of conditions then!

It’s hard to get a feel of how much snowpack is up there still ? As long as we aren’t talking about post-holing, icepack, or avalanche conditions I don’t plan on bringing any snow gear.

What gear would you suggest?

I’d love to, but I don’t have room for my mountaineering gear! Probably just going to stick to hikable trails, and MTN biking.

Won’t see it for myself until this weekend, but we’re planning to bring micro spikes, snowshoes and ice axes (and even then may have to turn around). I would expect quite a bit of post-holing due to the rapidly deteriorating snow pack, but alas, there are a lot more people on this forum more experienced than myself who may have some insight to add!

Here is a great trip report from Wilson from just a couple weekends ago: https://www.14ers.com/php14ers/tripreport.php?trip=17777

You may also want to give the Norwood Ranger District a ring - they could probably fill you in on current conditions and possibly suggest a good alternate: 970-327-4261.

Happy Trails!

Keep me posted! And thanks for the advice! :thumbsup

Alpha Betty - Good Beta!! Thanks :medal

Todd, what days are planning on biking? Might try to make one of your rides. :cheers

Yeah, TODD. I may have to get down on this too. I’ll be up Tuesday ish

We get in on Saturday, and we’ll probably chill on Sunday. Hoping to check the trail from Mary E to town out on Monday, and decide from there if we are going to ride into the festival any days. Probably planning on riding to town on Tuesday too, to the craft beer tasting at 12 on Tuesday. The Telluride Brewing Co. is just a short ride away to, so I plan on filling my growler regularly! Wednesday planning on going to Ridgeway to some hot springs. Saturday morning I think we plan on missing much of the main stage till YMSB, probably do some hiking that day. My profile picture is of our tapestry we’ll be hanging at camp, come find us! I got the Trails Illustrated topo map of the entire telluride/ouray area, so I’m ready to get out!

I would definitely plan on bringing some sort of floatation for the afternoon descent. I live in the front range but have been out every weekend lately and the snow is a mess by noon. If you are planning on Mount Wilson I would definitely have an ice ax and crampons. You could do Trico Peak from Black Bear Pass if you don’t want to do something technical above Telluride. The Wilsons will be a mixed climb right now.

You’re not planning on bringing any snow gear? :eek I’ve had to use crampons and an ice axe on the Wilsons into the second week of July. If you are planning to attempt Wilsons/El Diente/Sneffels this year plan on a steep snow climb and know how to use your avy gear. Good luck and be safe.

I’ll have to rent some gear I guess. :hop

Thanks for the tips everyone.

So I think I’m going to hire an outfitting company that comes with all the necessary equipment. It’s a bit pricey but for a desert dweller like myself who craves snow-covered things, I think it will be worth it ! Is anyone interested in joining possibly for a Wednesday summit attempt at Wilsons?

whats the costs? do you have a link? Going to chat with the wife, but my interest has been peaked ;)! What is the time frame of being finished? We have plans on weds starting around 3pm. If we could be back at camp by then I’d say we’re down. Unless its like a thousand bucks or something. I haven’t bagged a 14 in over 16 years! Guess I’ll go ahead and pack my Koflachs as I’d prefer not to rent boots.

Currently looking at these guys:

https://mountaintrip.com/

Here are their costs:

1:1 - $ 450.00
2:1 - $ 275.00
3:1 - $ 225.00
4:1 - $ 175.00

I also have a meeting at 7pm Wed night so yeah that’d be cool for a very early attempt and then back to camp. However, I don’t know if they can guarantee the return time?
