Not again: Can we do PLEASE something about the tarp line?

Oh, I hate talking about this as much as you hate reading, but can’t we do SOMETHING about how the tarp line STARTS every night?

Seems like whoever thinks it’s a good time on Wednesday to set out the first chair gets to be first in line for the rest of the fest. If that’s true, I’m setting a chair out tonight! Seems STUPID to do things that way (and tho I’m well-known for my stupidity, I’m trying to keep it to a minimum these days).

Last year there were chairs set up Wednesday MORNING. Come on, let’s figure something out!

Here’s one idea. Everyone who wants to be first in line for the Thursday run has to show up with their chair at, say, 10:00 pm on Wednesday. Everyone gets one playing card per chair. Then we shuffle another deck and randomly call out the cards. The person with the first called card has a seat, and the usual “gotta be IN the chair or we move it” rule applies. If nobody has that card (there’s usually not 52 people THAT interested in being first), another is drawn.

Repeat that every night at the designated time (first song of the last act) and that way EVERYONE has a chance to be first. Plus everyone has an opportunity to enjoy the 8pm artist without worry.

OK, that’s just one idea and I’m sure YOU might have a better one or a way to improve this one. But isn’t it about time we do something simple to alleviate the problem of “first chair Wednesday = first chair everyday” and to eliminate the need for people to start chair sitting when they should be enjoying the music???

Hey Bro,

are you just a troll trying to stir the pot? First with the tickets and now this?

This subject has been beaten to DEATH!

I sure hope no one responds to this. I would be the Planet has a thousand other things to worry about than this.

There are plenty of un-used tarps and chairs throughout the day, plenty of close-up space for all

if people are more interested in sitting in line all night than music, campground picking, fun and entertainment, well, lol… and have at it. won’t be me and i won’t miss anything all weekend.

John, John, John, :flower :rolleyes :flower

Oh I know, rent a bench with pizza delivery and breakfast with coffee. What bench did you say that was #420? :flower

Dancing girls that go by every few hours to keep it interesting and keep you awake :rolleyes :flower

Oh, Oh, OH I know! My wagon will become a food wagon/truck with cupcakes!

How’s that? Afterall these years, tisk tisk. It is what it is John because it works best. What do you suggest?
I still stand by my idea.
Blindfold everyone :lol Ready, set, GO!

I think you mean the “Group W Bench”. :lol

:lol :lol

How many days?

:cheers
There’s a tarp line

Cool! Maybe these can help?
Nope they missed the cards! :wave

I’ll respond to say, “play nice.”

If you don’t like the subject, no need to respond.

…especially no reason for name calling. There are plenty of other discussion forums online with that nonsense.

I expect a higher baseline from you, erndog…

John’s idea of coming up with a community minded solution by those who are in line is an interesting one. I hope it works out…

:cheers

D.

Disagreeing respectfully is very Festivarian. Calling out and calling names, not so much. Personally, I agree that the system has its flaws. Most do, and all up, clearly the festival of year. Nonetheless, seeing chairs on the way out at 11:00 that have been there since noon is a little disheartening. Diversity of opinion= a good thing, but best to keep it kind methinks…

I’ve been called worse. And that’s just from others in my FAMILY!

But, in the words of Lyle Lovett, you’ve gotta TRY: “Look, I understand too little too late. I realize there are things you say and do you can never take back. But what would you be if you didn’t even try. You have to try! So after a lot of thought, I’d like to reconsider. Please, if it’s not too late…Make it a cheeseburger!”

And if nobody cares about trying something different, that’s fine with me: My chair is already in line!!!

Lyle also said fat babies have no pride.

Something different…hum. Like what? As long as its a line, lets get creative about it.

Only people build in fairness John. There are different levels of concisness and kindness… Ever see that gal in the store that blocks the isle so no one can move…she knows your there waiting but she just makes you wait…

People are funny and rules are broken every day. Guidelines are in place and set and when you deal with mass all you can hope for is persuasion. Hows my spelling? :lol

But you had to be the First!

…and let’s not forget you called yourself a troll :pirate

I don’t mind not being first in line. Also, it isn’t like Claire/group just show up at the end of the night to get their spot. They are sitting in their chairs nearly all day long. It isn’t how I choose to spend my time, but each person enjoys their festival in different ways & I love I talk to those guys in front almost every time I walk by. Plus, they have a pretty good time there.

If randomness was enacted it would overwhelmingly favour the large/organized camps. I’m with a small group but we are willing to put in our time to get the spot we like. In our willingness to spend time in line, we are able to be equals with a large camp like R.A.M., Fishbone, Steamboat, Bowl, etc. We’re not in our chair 100% of the time, no, but we’re in it a good deal of the time. It’s hard to begrudge people that arent in a chair if they are out catching a late night pick, bathroom jam, at a nightgrass, or following Vince’s conga line through the campground.

And actually, the last few years have been miles better than what they were even a few short years ago. No chairs being thrown nor zip-tied to the fence, few tempers flaring, and some even getting that dreaded sleep. Claire and others used good ol’ festivarian ingenuity and started self policing so the line could remain the great thing it is.

It was mentioned that there aren’t 52 people wanting to be in line. If it was a random number generated entry, every camp would be sure to have their people there to get a # to ensure their greatest chance of being closer to the front. I mean we organize for beer, bloodies, fashion shows, pot lucks, and Godesses among other things. RAM alone could almost grab at least 75% of the 52 spots. (And yes I realize 52 is a theoretical #) Having been at PBG fests for RockyGrass and FolksFest and been through the random numberedness, I would much rather put in my time to get a chance of getting the spot I prefer. Waiting in line sure beats winding up with #760, but just because that is how I choose to spend my festival time doesnt mean it would be worth it to another.

there are people I see every year in the Town Park line, often at 4.30 in the morning, and are able to reconnect and continue our camaraderie in the brief time we get to spend together every year talking over births, marriages, divorces, new beers or whiskeys, ups, downs, trips, books, hikes, death, and maybe even a Ralph Stanley song.

I like knowing I’ll see many of the same people siting around me in line every night/morning. Randomness would destroy that. Along with the morning coffee on the picnic table, the Baked runs for the line sitters, the crispness of the air at 5am, the hoards of people “not-sleeping” on the sidewalk through town (as any change to TP line would have to be mimicked in the ‘other’ line I would imagine), the “is that frost on my sleeping bag?” queries, reminiscing previous years line experiences, the anticipation of seeing the top of the sun over Black Bear, plus the overnight line stories. Who doesn’t love a good story? Sure these things are possible otherwise, but not with the same zeal and festivarian spirit.

Heck, I would much rather see a random # line for the Merch tent on Thursday morning instead of the entry line.

As evidenced by so many friends in so many different ways over the last year, sometimes a year can be rough. But being able to come back for your friends (oh and the music) lets you forget a little while helping you to remember a whole lot more at the same time. A lot of the people in line are line are part of my Festivarian family and I know they will help me to remember and forget the things that need either or both. Which leads me to think the line is pretty great the way it is.

Wow. That post from meanderingjeeper makes me want to get in tarp line right now! I’m really going to miss not being there this year and not having those experiences in the “other” tarp line is one of the reasons why.

Well said meanderingjeeper. Have a great festival! :cheers

I second everything Meanderingjeeper says. :medal

By the way, really nice weather, huh? Forecast looks great, too.

I agree with MJ too, but I also think the original point of the thread holds some validity and is being somewhat missed (or dismissed,) considering the volatile nature of the subject. :burn

He’s talking about the very start of the line on the Town Park side, not random numbers for the entire line. Look, time in Telluride is very valuable and if time is the currency for the line that’s fine, so be it. But when it comes time for that price to be paid, it should be paid. Not many are willing to make a serious time commitment so I think CJ (original poster) is actually correct in assuming that there aren’t that many folks that want to OCCUPY the line for hours on end.

So it’s the empty chairs in the line for the line that look somewhat ridiculous also to this admittedly casual line-observer. It’s this line for the line that CJ is referring to, not really the line itself and asking if there isn’t a better way.

Hey, there may not be, but I don’t think it’s a bad question.

I told myself to stay outta this, but I just want to clarify something.

If you’re first in line on thursday, you’re first in line on EVERY other day, too, because at the designated time, everyone moves to the fence line in the same order. So the people who get the primo (often very large) tarp space the first day get that spot every day. For some reason, that just doesn’t seem right. But obviously I’m in the minority.

I do NOT think this is something PB should do something about. And I do NOT think we Town Park/Warner Field line policies will translate to the “city” line. Given the hugely negative reaction of the original post, this is just not gonna change this year, and maybe not ever.

Sounds like most people don’t even see this as a problem. And even I don’t think there’s an ultimate solution. So I’ll do the only thing I can right now: :cheers grab a beer and pack for the fest…
