I know it won’t be sealed up and announced for awhile, but I started a thinkin’ about what could, should, or might be in store for the nightgrass patrons this year. This is always one of my favorite parts of the festival because it tests my stamina, teaches me to pace myself, and it’s usually where the Festivarians and musicians can get a little loose.
I know nightgrass is usually for the younger pickers, but I think a a special Living Legends at The Sheridan Opera House sounds nice. Maybe not the Houseband, but something similar.
hmmmm, I like the thinking, in that case, I would say give us a ‘Sammy Bush and Friends’ concert. Let the guy lead a LONG evening of picking with friends (Salmon Boys, Del and them, etc), little bit of luck we might have about 15 people on stage playing before it’s all said and done
Still really really really hoping for a Salmon late set, and after the heat Cornmeal brought at their late show last year, I say give em another one, better yet at the Sheridan!
Wednesday: Yonder Kick Off party
Thursday: The Drew Emmitt Band (and friends) at the Sheridan or the Moon.
Friday: McCoury Boys and Friends (that show two years ago was amazing) at the Sheridan
Saturday: Yonder at the Sheridan, Cadillac Sky at the Moon.
That’s all subject to change depending on the announcement this week.
I’m just hoping Yonder doesn’t have a Nightgrass gig the night before their main stage set. Two years ago I heard how they tore up Nightgrass, but I thought their afternoon set never got out of second gear.
OK, now it’s time to seriously start talking about, and hopefully influencing, what the nightgrass shows will be like this year.
The festi lineup is great, once again, although I must state my opinion that it seems to lack some of the energetic, new, young bluegrass bands that are extremely abundant right now. I’ve always loved seeing the new young bucks up there bringin the energy so people can dance their tarps to shreds. That being said, this year seems a little unbalanced toward the easier listening/polished side of things. Great lineup, just a bit unbalanced(IMO). And that leads me to nightgrass…
Let the young bloods pick up a strom when the sun goes down!
Mountain Standard Time
Greensky Bluegrass
Cornmeal
etc.
I also think a Larry Keel & Natural Bridge nightgrass would be epic! You know Mudflap will be around…
Another nightgrass of Cornmeal would be ideal!! :thumbsup
Leftover nightgrass, I’m in…will need serious pre-planing of minimal pre-partying!! I have a few Latenight Leftover’s under my belt form High Sierra, some of my best moments and memories :cheers
Crooked Still nightgrass last year was very memorable for me, for many reasons… The energy was AMAZING, what a party! :medal
And as for the Houseband nightgrass idea, the Punch Brothers Sunday night at the Sheridan, was pretty much in that vein, after the Radiohead set, everyone and their cousin got up on that stage, Jerry was sitting behind me just enjoying the show, Bela and Bryan were rocking it, the Aoife O’Donovan + Chris Thile duet on Farewell Angelina was so beautiful, the intimate final was priceless… I don’t think I could have imagined such a perfect ending to the festival! :cheers
Leftover Salmon
Yonder Mountain
Trampled By Turtles(the Cornmeal of last year)
Sam Bush and Friends
Cadillac Sky (Go listen to “Insomniac Blues for Matthew” and see why"
Hot Rize
Del
I wouldn’t be surprised at all, and definitely want, a Mumford and Sons and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros Nightgrass show(s).
(The Mumford and Sons album is awesome! :thumbsup)
I don’t know how much material each band has so a double bill of Mumford/Sharpe (at the Sheridan) would be sweet/not out of the question (remember when Crooked Still and The Avett’s did this back in 2007?).
Trampled is not on the lineup for the festival. However, Cornmeal last year was not either and they played Nightgrass. For some reason, I feel like Pert Near Sandstone or Trampled By Turtles (or some other latenight rowdy band) will play a nightgrass show.
