Mountain Driving

Flat-Lander Newbie here… and this is not a joke.

Experienced Festivarians Please Speak to us about the roads to and from Telluride, Colorado.

The only way out is the same way you came in :drive :drive :drive!!!

take your time, enjoy the views. try not to travel at night or during twilight hours (lots O’ critters) and be prepared for any and all types of weather conditions.

If you are the driver then do NOT enjoy the views. Watch the road. There are a few spots along the drive in where there is very little room for error. But there are plenty of overlook pulloffs.

Hee Hee!

O.K. Rick and Hooch, you two have come the closest to the information I was looking to find. :thumbsup

Talk to me about the road grades, twists and turns and what not. FWIW, I have survived 129 from Maryville, TN to Robbinsville, NC headed down the mountain on the back of a fully loaded 1998 Yamaha Royal Star, Tour Classic, scrapping the running boards on every turn. Rand McNally lied. It looked like a straight little road on the map. :eek

I did speak with some folks on the phone the other day that talked about specific mountain passes from Colorado Springs on Hwy 50. Thought that information might be useful to others as well.

Thanks,
Hope Lin

Not knowing the roads, it’s best to keep within the posted speed for the curves.
Some of them you may be able to go 10 miles over without problem, but there are some that “really mean what they say” or you’ll end up off the road.
The only major grades between Denver and Telluride is Monarch pass and Dallas Divide, but if your car is in decent shape you won’t have any trouble climbing them. Avoid using your air conditioner while climbing them so you don’t overheat your car. :thumbsup

Nice pics, Dustin! Yep, that’s pretty much what you’ll have to work with. If you are coming from Durango north through Silverton and Ouray to get to TBF you will be driving over A LOT of those narrow roads with drop-offs. If you are coming from the north it will be less so, but the final drive from Placerville to Telluride has got a few areas that are not for the faint of heart. Just go slow and watch the road.

you’ll be alright… keep your eye on the road, but other than that, you hopefully won’t run into any snow-covered roads :stuck_out_tongue:

make sure you stop every so often so you can take in the views and allow your body to adjust to the altitude…

pull over > take in some deep breaths > take a few pictures > drink 64 oz. of water > get back in car > :drive > repeat.

:thumbsup

Get ready for your heart to break when you turn right on SR62 for the first time.
And yeah, what they said, keep your eyes, and the rubber, on the road!
Safe travels to everyone.
:drive

man you guys n gals  are freakin me out now!!! :thumbsup I can’t wait to make this drive :lol

Nope, no worries, really.
I’ve never had to drive there in the snow, and hopefully that doesn’t happen knocks wood, but even if so, you’re a Chicagoan, you know how to drive in that!
No hurries :thumbsup

And no worries!!

Thats right Semicharmed!!! Nothing like 70mph on the Dan Ryan in a white out!!! LOVE THAT LAKE EFFECT!!! :cheers

haha - more like 10mph! and that’s a good day!

When you are in the home stretch, as you leave Ridgway and start up the Dallas Divide, prepare to have your mind blown! :woohoo :woohoo :woohoo

Definitely!!!

Those pictures are AWESOME :medal and perfect to get the point across.

I spoke with my son-in-law about his drive from Seattle to Florida (Navy boy) and the man clamed-up. He couldn’t even tell me what it was like. I was onto another conversation when he tapped me on the shoulder and said, “it’s like that song… Slow Ride, take it easy” and then his face went white again.

PSA Complete! Thanks for the help! :thumbsup
