EDIT: I just received confirmation that since this is still a “stage one ban” fires will still be allowed in the pre-established metal rings at Illium. :thumbsup
I’ll do my best to update this thread if that changes. The most notable change would be the escalation to a “stage two ban”, which would eliminate the ability of any fires.
This website is the most direct link to fire ban information I have:
For those of you that may be unfamiliar with fire bans; the climate in Colorado can be EXTREMELY dry. This year is exceptionally dry at the moment. The risk of staring fires is VERY real and can be devastating to wildlife, and people, if not taken seriously. Anyone caught in violation of the fire ban risks state/federal penalties as well as your festival passes.
I don’t mean to sound overly bullish, but the fire bans are there for a reason. I was completely ignorant to such a thing when I moved to CO from the SE…after living here, I completely understand why they exist.
This has been a public service announcement…now back to your regularly scheduled festival preparedness…
good to know! Will definitely take into account with packing and food planning. We saw a large fire near the royal gorge bridge on our way home from Telluride in 2010, it was intense had traffic stopped for hours - houses and everything in danger!
Well, a fire ban may take away a little fun. But I would rather have a great place to keep coming back to year after year, :lol than chance a Forrest fire that would ruin everything for everybody. :mad Here is to hoping Telluride get’s some rain before the festival. :cheers
I hate to be the one who asks the “stupid question”. But, if a fire ban comes into effect, could we still use a covered charcoal grill? Would anyone have any idea how bad the fire ban would likely be, if they do put one into place? :huh
Yea, I have decided to bring a propane stove along with a small charcoal grill. Just in case we can use the grill. By the looks of it, Telluride may not get any or very little rain. So I bet a higher fire ban will be in place by the festival :mad. I hope I am wrong, and they get some good rain before TBF.
Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are now in effect for the GMUG National Forest.
We request that Planet Bluegrass inform your Mary E campers that they are:
Allowed to build fires using wood, coal, or charcoal within the existing metal fire rings in the Mary E campground. Fires are prohibited in any other device (e.g. coal, wood, or charcoal stove or grill).
Allowed to use petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns, or heating devices that meet the fire underwriter’s specifications for safety.
Allowed to smoke in Mary E campground but only while within a vehicle or while standing in an area that is at least 3 feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material.
As of right now, we’re not hearing of any major fires on the way to T-ride that would block roads. The big one in the news is way over here on the Front Range. Check the cotrip.com website, they’re good at keeping it updated.
Festivarians - I was a newbee last year and enjoyed the Festival to my wildest dreams, however we camped out at the Matterhorn CG outside of town and down towards Rico, 12 or 14 mile outside of town. It made for early evenings since I didn’t want to over indulge and drive back to the camp in a less than safe situation. And DUI is not something I can afford or want to chance and I’m certain you can appreciate. This year we’ve hit the jackpot and have secured camping reservations at the Mary I. campground. We will be bringing our 21 ft trailer and my question is this, are there reserved spots for trailers or is it a first come situation? I plan on arriving on Tuesday so I’m hoping I won’t have issues but wanted to see what the experts have to say. Thanks in advance.
Everybody should go get a $10 fire extinguisher to have around. 10,000 of them in Tride could be a game changer if needed.
The two campers who started the biggest fire in the history of NM last year were just fined 2 MILLION dollars for their actions, which was simply leaving a camp fire before it was totally out.
It’s pretty much first come, first served.
Just be aware that you will be required to have a vehicle pass for your trailer.
As far as your car, I think it may have to be parked elsewhere as well if it doesn’t have a pass.
