Based on the amount of activity on the trading sites, maybe it wasn’t the scalpers that were gobbling up all those tickets in the camping lottery. It was forward-thinking Festi-tradians hoping to use fest tickets as bait for sold out NightGrass shows.
I guess this is good news. Or at least I hope everyone gets what they want and doesn’t get stuck with tix they don’t need.
Buying up more tickets than needed and hording them for a later date to increase your odds of more tickets is scalping without making money. :huh :huh :huh
As someone with excess tickets I’m going to go ahead and defend myself. I have a group of three. We all put in for 3 tickets to the shows we wanted to go to at the cc and Palm (Yonder, Greensky and Del). We also put in for 2 tickets to the shows at the Sheriden (not sat). We didn’t apply for tickets for shows we didn’t want to see. Turns out we all hit yonder and got 2 hits on Del. Got one hit on Greensky and one on yonder Sheridan. I have arranged to sell my cc extras to a couple friends and a couple people on this board who were in need. I arranged to trade my 2 yonder for salmon and am attempting to use the del tickets to trade for that elusive 3rd Salmon ticket. Personally think this is fair and not an abuse of the system.
If you don’t think the scalpers have them . . . check on Craigslist . . .
besides, there used to be a TON more that opened up as we got closer to the actual dates, first of week June it seemed it was raining tickets back a few years ago . . not so much anymore.
Not ‘hordevarians’, more like ‘hedgevarians’ IMHO . . . some people are on here trading as individuals, others trading for friends, groups, camps . . . can’t say that I blame anyone, the lottery is the lottery, and you don’t know what you’ll get or how many you’ll get . . seems likes it’s all part of the experience . . . most of these trades seem to go off OK, the Planet will change names on your will-call Telluride passes
If you need or have an extra nightgrass and need or have an extra Town Park or whatever, it’s a market and I hope everyone gets whatever they want or need
I have to agree - we put in for tickets for the shows we want to go to. Got some, didn’t get others. Now it’s time to wheel and deal . . . meet some new people, make some new friends, help a brother out
you put in for and got triple of what you needed. i see what you are saying but you can get that its annoying to those who wish they had those tix too.
Very true Comlpete John. I do not know anyones situation but when there are so many people that do not even have festival tickets and there is nothing for sale on the forum, then when night grass lottery is done you see town parks, warner fields, and 4 days flowing around for trade only. I can only assume that some people have had them since December? It regulates unfortunate people from even attending TBF.
I think that’s what any smart person would do (and what we did, two of us). If you put in for one then you’re stuck going alone or having to find them on the forum anyway. It’s a lottery. It’s random. The fact that you got nothing has nothing to do with us getting a bunch. People need to cool down on this bitterness. Maybe the people holding onto 4days until now originally needed it and then somebody had to cancel? Ever think of that? So they decided, instead of selling it on craigslist, I’ll trade it for nightgrass. OR sell it on craigslist and be a totally awesome mom that had to give it up so her kids could go to Disney with their cousins (how I got my 4 day tix). So really, think about the fact the majority of these people MAY not be scalpers and may have just had their circumstances rocked.
Hey man, it’s a popular festival - not everyone is gonna get a ticket . . .
having said that, did you enter the lottery for tickets this year? Did you know about the ticket resale? there’s been plenty of opportunities to get tickets - there were 4-day tickets on the resale page for two Tuesdays in a row . . . they were up for A L O N G T I M E
I don’t think there are any extraordinary amount of extras floating about - it seems everyone on the nightgrass or telluride boards are looking and there are only a few offers of a Town Park, Warner, or whatever for trade . . . a few. A couple here or there. Not many.
However, your last point - “It regulates unfortunate people from even attending TB”, seriously, cry me a river. Almost everyone I know that wants to go to Telluride and has the means to get there, can take time away, and can afford the experience financially - all those people wind up going. I see them every year. And, like me, they started off the year with NOTHING - no tickets, nothing.
Hang in there. if you want to go, REALLY WANT TO GO, you’ll get there.
I usually try to get an extra of every ticket just in case I find someone who decides at the last minute to go to the festival. So… Extra four day pass, I put in for two tickets to nightgrass shows instead of just one… If I need to trade them I can, and if I need to sell them, someone who was patiently waiting at the venue gets rewarded. I don’t see the problem.
I too am in a group where we all hit our Yonder Conference Center request and now have 6 extras. We’ll see if they hold their value after the announcement today that Jeff Austin is leaving the band. Big bummer…and I will be selling my tickets for face value (always have) so I don’t catch criticism here. Sometimes you hit big, sometimes you get shut out.
I suppose it’s a gray area of sorts and don’t see an issue with people who put in for max amount and wind up with extras due to circumstance … such as everyone in their crew shooting for the same thing and all lucking out; however, I believe how the extras are ultimately handled is kind of what gets me.
I know there’s no official rule or guidelines, but it just seems to me that once you’ve acquired basic access at the “root level” - be it a TP/WF, or 4-day pass - that using extra TP/WF/4Days to acquire nightgrass would go against the grain of spreading the wealth so everyone who wants access to the core festival has the opportunity to do so. Maybe I’m arbitarily placing more importance on access to 4 days of the main stage.
also seems kinda likely ppl are going to be more likely just to buy off a scalper if they have nothing to trade with but really want to get into a show. which is disappointing considering there are apparently tons of festgoers just sitting there holding on to stacks of tix they have no intention of using.
this is a new phenomenon. only as far back as like 2008 i dont remember much problem at all getting in to most of these, certainly not selling out immediately. hell im pretty sure you could get a pass that was all-access nightgrass at that point.
So, if one has an extra Town Park or 4-day, she should sell up straight up and not trade it for a nightgrass? Somehow that is more ‘ethical’?
You’re assuming the person with the Nightgrass already has a festival ticket - for himself of their group . . . not always the case. You get shut out of the lottery, you score some decent nightgrass shows - and it’s the nightgrass that gets you your festival ticket . . .
It is not the economics of Nightgrass enrichment you decry, but rather of what comes around . . goes around . . ?
Just where, exactly, are these “stacks of tickets they have no intention of using” . . . EVERY TICKET IS ALMOST CERTAINLY GOING TO GET USED . . .
if there were SO MANY of these extra 4-days and town parks floating around, wouldn’t the nightgrass trade list be empty by now?
What is your point exactly about . . . 8 years ago, this wasn’t too hard? Shows selling out isn’t a new phenomenon . . . you used to be able to buy festival tickets from the Planet almost right up until almost the week of the show. There were times when Telluirde Bluegrass didn’t sell out!
nightgrass has matured. More bands want to play! There only used to ONE Sheridan show, now there’s 4 this year!! there’s more people out late at night than ever before
The all-venue wristband was a disaster and I’m glad they did away with it - did you ever go a Fly Me To The Moon Show and just stand around sweating while a bunch of drunk assholes chattered on and on while the music was playing? That was the nightgrass wristband for ya . . !
