Yeah, you will need some power source like a portable power block/phone charger.
Thank you!!! I missed that. I was trying to charge with computer… Got it now
Debbie
The smaller, or lighter/lightest power source is best, for fitting in the lampshade.
5 sleeps till we hit the road!
I picked up 2 extra lamp shades at the thrift store today if anyone needs one.
Just three sleeps…
I died a lampshade PURPLE! Fuzzy purple and red balls purchased. Going to try and make the lights I have work.
1.9 sleeps… :cheers
We brought a couple extra lampshades. You will need a hat to support them and the rest of the light gear, but hopefully they will help for those of you struggling to find any.
On the road to our happy place now and couldn’t be happier about seeing you all soon!
Hi Will
Here’s Will’s instructions for making a Lampshade fairy light hat. They’ll be opportunity to learn from the master during Camp Lampshadey Grove’s Getting Loaded prefest party on Wednesday the 19th, but if you want to make one beforehand here you go:
Hey folks- Here are the deets on how to make a lampshade hat!
- Head to the thrift store and up-cycle a fancy lampshade (bigger than your head, but not too big- these can get a bit heavy).
- While thrifting, grab a stiff brimmed hat that fits you well, and either sits within the bottom of the lampshade or can be cut down to do so.
- Grab these lights off of Amazon: Color Changing Globe String Lights 33FT Compatible with Alexa Google Home Indoor Outdoor USB RGB String Lights with Remote 66 LEDs LUMIMAN Music Smart Fairy Lights for Party Bedroom Wedding 5V (or something similar. Key is that they are LED (energy-saving and lightweight, and can be powered by a small USB charger).
- Reuse one of your USB chargers.
- Here’s where your creativity comes into play: You can either poke holes in the shade and hot glue the lights to come out (with the wires inside (maroon fleur de lis lampshade hat below), or wrap the lights from the outside and hot glue in spots (shark lampshade hat below). This second option may require covering the lampshade and lights with another shear or very thin material (your favorite old t-shirt, etc).
- Situate the controller and USB battery to reside inside the lampshade.
- Hot glue the hat inside the bottom of the lampshade.
- Optional: Add a foam core covering for the top. This just adds a nice finishing touch.
- Also optional: Hot glue a finial to the top for a fun topper. These can be anything from a small toy (like a rubber shark or mardi gras bead), or a pinecone, or anything fun.
- Also optional: Add fringe- nice to have some movement! That’s it! These second-hand, repurposed/up-cycled party hats are so much fun and a huge hit! Good luck!!
