Lampshade hats and parade!

You may have noticed at previous TBF’s on Saturday night during Sam Bush’s set there’s a group of weirdos wearing lit up lampshades as hats parading through the audience for a couple songs. Some of you may think, Look at those idiots. Some of you may have thought gee I’d like to do that. If you are interested in join us here’s what you need to do.

First gather the simple ingredients to make the “hat”.
Second come to Town Park on Tuesday evening 4pm-6pm with your hat ingredients. You don’t have to be camping in TP to come join. Find Camp Lampshadey Grove by the River. We will also be serving build your own Loaded Baked Potato, with chili and all the toppings, vegan options available.

If you’ve already made a Lampshade in past years, don’t forget to bring it!

Here’s the ingredient list:

Here’s the basics of what you’ll need to bring to make a lampshade hat:

  1. You need a lampshade! Find one that’s not too heavy, but big enough to fit over a round brimmed hat, like a fedora style hat.
  2. You need a snug fitting round brim hat, that fits inside your lampshade, or can be trimmed to fit.
  3. one strand of 10-20ft LED Fairy lights, must be USB power source. The kinds with remote for color changing are best!
  4. one usb power bank, lighter weight the better. This is going inside the lampshade to power the lights, so get one that isn’t too bulky or heavy! You can generally find a decent cheap one at truck stops, but Amazon has you covered too.
  5. Flair, bring whatever decorations you want to make your lampshade your own custom piece of art! We’ll have a variety of yarns, and tinsel and stuff to fancy your shade up, but there’s so many cool things you can do.

We will have glue guns, various crafting supplies, and expert advice on building your own lampshade. We always have a couple extra shades on hand if you can’t find one, but that’s first come and gone.

If you aren’t in Telluride on Tuesday, and want to make a Lampshade Hat and join the parade on Saturday, you can make your own at home. We suggest gluing your hat inside the lampshade for stability. Also helps to glue the fairy lights on the outside of the hat, with the USB end having enough length to fit into the top opening of the lampshade. Paint, add decor, and get artsy with your shade!

We will all meet up to begin the parade inside the entrance to the Festival grounds between the Beer tent and the Merch tent, just before Sam Bush begins playing. Once all known participants have made it inside, we will try for a group photo, then begin single file parading through the audience. We do about two circles or figure 8’s through the audience, following paths where possible. When we reach open spaces we circle up, regroup, then start parading again, once the stragglers are all caught up.

It’s really fun, silly, and lots of high fives! We hope you’ll join us in our annual fun times!
