I must giggle seeing Jim James in the lineup. Does anyone remember when he played blues and brews a few years back? Terrible performance with people bailing in the dark stumbling around trying to collect their stuff. That being said I certainly hope he just had a bad night and we will see a better version this time around.
I also remember seeing him then and recall not being all that moved, so just scanned through this show:
Not looking to begrudge him or the band, but it’s just not my cup of tea. I have a hard time getting into the whole “subdued dark(er) ethereal” thing and this is in light of having a fairly wide open pallet. For example, Widespread Panic isn’t my favorite “jam band” in that they lean more heavily on the darker side of things, but at least they’ll melt you face and allow the flow materialize into kernals of full on funk. JJB just seems totally flat on this front (for me at least).
Might give them a half hour, but will likely try to turn in early or catch something else.
I’m right there with you FOM. I’m not a big fan, of him or MMJ, though all my friends think something is wrong with me because I don’t. I went to see MMJ once and left after about 30 minutes. I figure I’ll give it at least 30 minutes for the light show alone, then find my guitar back at camp.
Yeah, I know a lot of people like him … so by the same token definitely not looking to say anything is “wrong” with others for doing so. It’s just not my thing.
Don’t forget JJ’s part in The New Basement Tapes, the band for which included Marcus Mumford and Rhiannon Giddens. There’s a solid possibility that he’ll tailor his show for the crowd and the setting given his participation in the past with some musicians whose work is more aligned with what we expect at TBF.
Then again, there’s simply no way his set could be more entertaining than this thread!
