2015 Festival Questions

and some posts from our new international member, Australian Fan, the crew at Kamp Duk Tape thinks it would be in the Festivarian spirit to open our “doors” to a couple or a small (maybe 3 people max) group of international Festivirgins who want and plan to come to Telluride Bluegrass Fest - but who can’t fly/travel with camping gear - to join us in Town Park for TBF2015.

So, this offer is limited by necessity, but if you’re traveling from overseas and you scored (or hope to score) Town Park tickets yet can’t arrange the camping side of things, then Kamp Duk Tape can provide:

  • a tarped tent site in the “Duk Tape Forest” with a loaner 4-man or larger tent for your use all week,
  • 2 (or 3) sleeping bags and sleeping pads (perhaps not fancy but clean and sufficient for the week - Therma-Rest pads at a minimum),
  • associated Festi-gear such as camp chairs, and
  • access to all of the KDT amenities (e.g., our full-service communal Kamp Kitchen, high-volume coffee system, cooler space for food and beverages, pickin’ tent, solar charging station, etc),
  • logistical and festival Q&A with ongoing communication to make sure you’ve gotten all your pre-fest questions answered, that you know where to go and what to bring, and to ensure that you know how to find us once you hit the Town of Telluride;

not to mention being part of our “inside the fest” set-up, which we work quite hard to put together once the music starts.

In exchange, we would expect that you, our new international members of Kamp Duk Tape:

  • arrive well educated, by perhaps having read all (or most, or at least a goodly portion) of the posts on this Forum,
  • do line duty for us 1 night (we arrange this within our group for the 4-days of tarp run and no one is exempt - we all do line duty at some point),
  • participate in our other group chores including but not limited to (1) beer and grocery runs into town, (2) tarp run duty (3) helping with trash/compost/recycling, and (4) doing some dishes from time to time (because everyone who eats the food that Courtney turns out has to do some dishes and given the amazing cuisine she’s produced the last few years you’ll be happy to do your share of dishes with her at the helm in the kitchen anyway).

These are things we’re all doing already, so please don’t think we’re simply recruiting people to do our dishes every day :flower

Kamp Duk Tape, which was 50+ folks in 2014, has in the past opened its doors (or tents or tarps) to lost and wandering Troubadors, total strangers, solo travelers and entire families, many of whom have become full-time KDT members or, at least, long term friends. We really are pretty friendly.

Maybe I should put together an application form, but I think we’ll go for now with the “most impassioned plea” for camping assistance for international travelers. Until we have lottery results it’ll be difficult to commit, but anyone outside the CONUS who wants to consider this offer, please just shoot me a PM.

i think it’s great that a community of long time fans of this festival can reach out to us newbs

this tarp thing has me a little baffled/worried so i have a question or two more, if u all will indulge me(again)

i once saw a time lapsed utube video of panic fans rushing the ga area at red rocks and how it unfolded.
it was a nightmare of groups of 2 people rushing into the venue and setting up a 20 foot tarps only to hold that area for their 17 friends who would show up much later in the day. which kinda sucks(imo). is that what happens at TBF?

is this festival a bring your lawn chair and set it up kinda deal and thats your spot for the day? or perhaps lawn chairs aren’t allowed in the festival area? i’m really hoping there is a GA pit close to the stage(s) where one can shuffle in later, stand and watch the show, without disturbing/blocking the people who set up their lawn chairs 4 hours previously.

for sure coming from canada it isn’t an option for me to bring a whole camp set up. going by a walmart(ugh) before heading into town is very possible and i have no problem buying some things there, like a sleeping bag, lawn chair maybe even a tent. = cost of being there = no worries with that

i’m still wondering if i should put in my name for camping. by the sounds of it that is a lottery, same as getting tickets. i would only assume they draw the ticket lottery first and then from those winners they start with the camp lottery next? correct?

if i get tickets to the festival and can’t pull together my accommodations

  1. are the concert/camping tickets transferable?
  2. is it possible to drive in and out of town just for the festival everyday?

There is really only two lotteries.
There is a lottery for Town Park camping and Warner Field camping (which includes the 4 day festival pass), and then there is a lottery for Nightgrass (late night shows in town).

Passes are non-transferable. What you buy is what you get.

If you camp outside of town you will be directed where to park and take a shuttle in to the festival grounds each day. Unless you have a special Town Barricade Pass (which is for locals and those renting hotel/condo rooms) you cannot drive into town during the festival.

There is a section up front that is only for low back chairs, and then there is a section for standard high back lawn chairs, and a section in the back and along the side for shade tents (EZ-ups).
If you don’t want to be involved in the tarp run you can still find a decent spot in the high back chair section or you can stand along the side of the stage. There is no standing directly in front of the stage until later in the evening when everyone stands.

I hope that clears up some of your questions. If not, feel free to ask some more. :thumbsup

I’ll try to clear some of this up, as well. The Tarp Run occurs every day. While some will have you believe that there are camps who will set up a 20 foot tarp for their group of 10 and then never be there, that’s not a problem I’ve encountered in 7 years of attending. The first three years I attended the festival, I was part of a small group (three people). We never put out a tarp and just tarp hopped. If there’s an empty tarp, feel free to throw down a chair and enjoy that space until the owners return, at which point you can ask if there’s room for you to remain there (a friendly offer of a beer run never hurts!). Nine times out of ten, that group will tell you you are welcome to share their space. Every once in a while, you might run into a group who has limited space and a large number coming in for the next set, at which point they will politely ask you if you can find another space.

There are standing/dancing areas to the side of the stage that offer you a good sight line, but you will not be able to set up a chair there.

As for the lottery, Tom is correct. Both Town Park and Warner Field camping passes include the four day festival pass. So if you win one of those, you don’t have to deal with not being able to get your festival pass.

Once you have your wristband put on at the festival, it’s non-transferable. At any time before that, you are welcome to buy or sell them (for face value ONLY!). So if you end up with a Town Park pass and realize you can’t go, you won’t be loosing that money. Post it in the ticket section of this forum and someone will scoop it up from you immediately. Or, if you realize you won’t be able to attend early enough, you can even return the ticket to Planet Bluegrass for a full refund because they’re cool like that.
