If anyone is planning on coming to Telluride via Monarch Pass on a weekday–>DON’T DO IT! Part of the route is only open 1 hour each weekday to alternating traffic. There are detours if you want to take your time and check out different scenery. It’s back to I-70 for me.
Great PSA for sure!
However, it’s open Sat/Sun and I’ve taken it twice on Sundays heading to Denver … which helps to avoid I70 traffic heading back to Denver.
Thank you for posting this.

That’s why I said weekdays in my post.
I know and wasn’t suggesting you were wrong in any way. You posited sound advice. I was just offering up my experience on the weekend to call some more attention to the fact that it’s still a good option if the days of the week work out and not to completely ditch it as an option. It also looks like Friday at 5:30 PM it’s open, as well as Monday from 6:30AM - 8:30AM.
I’d be curious if anyone has experience getting through on a weekday during the windows they allocated to allow traffic to get through? I wouldn’t chance it if I didn’t have to, but do have sleep study in Gunninson coming up in a few weeks and will kind of be forced to do it.
It should also be noted that Cottonwood Pass, between Buena Vista and Gunnison is also temporarily closed https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.9news.com/amp/article/news/local/wildfire/gypsum-eagle-county-wildland-fire/73-bc2cb69e-eb9f-472b-be34-844b67c834b9.
I was really looking forward to spending some time in Gunnison
THANK YOU!
