Will we be able to sit in it?
The St. Vrain is high, very high. It is currently closed to tubing by the County Sherriff. I have heard rumors that it will be closed for Rocky Grass. Hopefully, warm weather will melt the snow in the next ten days and the creek flows will decline. It doesn’t look that way though. Maybe the management could secure a part of the river and somehow make it safe? It would be a bummer to have very hot weather and no way to cool off.
The monsoons have come early and we have been getting a lot of rain almost every day. Bring reliable rain gear. I like ponchos. Mine fits over my chair and keeps water from going down the back and into the seat. Don’t trust the “water resistant” ponchos.
The above post was a week ago and now the water has come down by a foot and the tubing ban is lifted. Right now, the water is still very high for small kids but I think the flows will continue to decline. The snow higher up is finally starting to peter out. It’s gonna be great!
The water seems to be coming down. Yes, the river is still closed to tubing but we have almost two weeks. I think the tubing ban will be lifted by then. Still, it will be moving faster than usual. Need to keep a close eye on the kids…
Well folks,
We just set our campsite at Meadows Park and the St. Vrain river is raging. It has to be at least two feet higher than normal. Tubing is ban and the only thing you can float is white water crafts. I do hope it goes down by next week. If not it will be too dangerous to even wade in. If it doesn’t change I’m sure Planet Bluegrass will make sure the festival area is safe. Sorry for the bummer news.
Tubing ban has been lifted as of today.
:cheers
Can you rent tubes in Lyons or somewhere close?
You can get tubes across the street from planet bluegrass, but I think they just sell them, not rent. You can also ask some nice people (they’re everywhere) who aren’t using theirs, usually you can find someone who will share.
Be careful if you tube! We were up today and a few tubers had some serious trouble. Feet caught in rocks, tubes flipped, that sort of thing. The river is running really high. Hopefully it’ll be a bit more calm by the weekend!

Good news y’all -
The Sheriff’s Office, after consultation with the Lyons Town Board, is cancelling the Tubing Ban for the North and South Saint Vrain Rivers as of 12:00 p.m. today, July 20, 2011. Law Enforcement officers will be removing the restriction notices along the rivers.

I read they opened the river to tubs last week.
Is it still open?
Does it look safe for children?
It is open, running higher than the historical average (Stream gage) but nothing crazy. There is a nasty branch hanging over the creek near Meadow Park you’ll need to watch out for. Went tubing last weekend and it was a great time, very refreshing.
My honest opinion is that it’s high enough to make up for last year, I am going but not my kids.
It is too high for me to take my kids: with or without a vest (I’m a mother hen, and they’re 6 and 9 y.o.)
I would have a sturdy tube and shoes that won’t get sucked off and you’ll be fine!
Awesome!! Does anyone know where to get the tubes besides George’s tire shop across the street?
