Horseshoes and Hand Grenades

In the last nine years I have seen the band Horseshoes and Hand Grenades probably over 120 times. I first saw them May 7th 2010 as the first of three bands at a nearby friend’s party. Although I probably had influenced them the year before by hiring two young students to help me clean up my maple sap collection system of tubing and paid them with a pair of town park tickets. And seeing that one of them was a house mate of a soon to be band I’m sure it would have a great impact in them wanting to be in the Telluride band contest. I had also met Adam and his older brother Ben waiting to get in to a YMSB Sheridan show probably fifteen years ago. So I made a point of meeting the band members upon hearing they’re going out to be in the band contest in 2012. They got to spend the week in town park and played for Rumballs and at camp Run Amuck and Maple Alley as well as the Fly Me to the Moon beside the contest. They finished third although they seemed to have the crowd behind them but the winning band probably looked more polished. In the last seven years they have four albums Another Round, This Old Town, Middle Western and The Ode. The band contest gave them the single microphone style that seems to give them much of their power to connect with the audience and create their own form of music. The five members met in college at UW Steven Point and have gone from being one of my favorite young bands to be my favorite band to see live period. Friday morning is going to be early for this much energy but it sets up the whole day of great music. And their nightgrass show will be good enough that I will miss the end of Greensky but that’s ok. So get ready Telluride for my friends Dave, Sam, Collin, Russ and Adam and their form of Wisconsin based bluegrass.

Such a great story Al and based on your recommendations I’m super pumped to see them live

This is going to be a really good festival year.

You can find live recordings of Horseshoes and Hand Grenades on Etree live music archives and Mixlr as well as video on YouTube.
Now for something completely different I get to see Mott the Hoople 74 reunion tonite at First Avenue, only been waiting 45 years for this show.

thanks for the insight!!

This is great! I can’t wait! I was getting excited listening to their stuff before I read this and now I need to start listening even harder. Do you have a favorite album? Think they are going to play most of the stuff off The Ode?

I will second Maple Al’s statements, you do not want to miss these guys. I certainly haven’t seen quite as many of their shows as Al has, but I’ve seen them at least 3-4 times per year for the last 7 or so years. Their shows have so much energy it, I really hope they get a Nightgrass show!

I just saw them at beginning of March and their show had a great mix of their last few albums, mixing some new stuff with the old.

Ryan

I can beat Bluegrass Brian by a few minutes and confirm that they are playing the Fly Me To the Moon Friday night…
And that they will play a mix of songs from all four albums plus a few choice covers and a few brand new songs. And that Adam might be the best at adding impromptu verses to some songs.

hell yeah!

How exciting for you and then Al! I just bought there new album “The Ode”.
