I don’t know if you can accuse all of a band’s following of being rude. In reality, SCI draws a much younger crowd than say a Richard Thompson, Peter Rowan, Emmy Lou or Rodney Crowell. And many of today’s 18-28 year olds who attend shows are rude, egotistical, entitled, on something, and without many socially redeeming qualities. It’s more of a generational moral/value gap problem than a SCI fan base filled with delinquents. Glad you liked their set though! :cheers
I heard plenty of yakking regardless of which band was playing and most of it was coming from those considerably older than 18-30. YMMV!
Trampled by Turtles
Richard Thompson
Masters or Bluegrass
Loved Rodney and Emmylou – to hear EmmyLou harmonizing with Rodney on (opening number!) Return of the Grievous Angel was sublime…gave me goosebumps…Gram was smiling somewhere.
My two other favorite moments.
Punch Brothers doing Beach Boys harmonies on that track from Smile! What can one say?
The dobro breakdown on Jackson Browne’s Take it Easy…
Overall favorite sets (no particular order):
EmmyLou and Rodney
Punch Brothers
Greensky
Richard Thompson
Sam Bush Band
Lake Street Dive
Greensky Bluegrass
Stringdusters
SCI (almost perfect)
Lake Street Dive
Jerry
Dusters were magnificent and played a wonderful festival set. The Elks Park set was fantastic – a Telluride treasure.
Punch Brothers - a fine and rollicking Elks Park set.
Elephant Revival - I had seen them before put was impressed by their sound and how full it seemed this time around.
YMSB - a very fun festy set.
Steve Martin/Edie Brickell - she has a magnificent voice.
Sam Bush - excellent and fun.
Trampled - fun and better than I remember (maybe it was the setting, or the marsh-mellows!).
Bela - incredile solo set.
Emmylou and Rodney Crowell - an amazing pairing.
Nightgrass/Greensky – we ain’t takin’ no *uckin’ set break – 3 hours straight of mind bending music – outstanding.
Oh yes – and everything else!
Clegg song was outstanding…what was it?
-All three sets by the Stringdusters were amazing and perfect for their respective settings. :thumbsup (Though I was a little perturbed at the people sitting during the NG set.)
-STEVE MARTIN!!! I cannot lie, I was disappointed when he was not on the initial line-up with SCR, and while I would have loved to see the Mumford gents, I was ecstatic at his addition. Does anyone have a set-list??? Did the play “Women Like to Slow Dance”? I don’t remember…If this did happen does anyone have audio/video? :flower
-Bela’s solo set was fantastic and magical
-All three sets by the Stringdusters were amazing and perfect for their respective settings. :thumbsup (Though I was a little perturbed at the people sitting during the NG set.)
I was standing 4th row center and was asked to sit down during the first set of the Palm show. I know everybody paid for a ticket and that it was late after a long day, but I can’t help but feel like that’s poor form. I don’t mind people sitting, but I was standing because people in front of me were standing too – I don’t quite get the logic of asking us to sit. Kind of pissed me off, to be honest, but I got over it and they ended up moving anyway.
Greensky did Atlantic City at the Palm
YES! Loved this. :medal
In order:
*Greensky - both mainstage and nightgrass were face-melt quality
*Elephant Revival
*Steve Martin & Steep Canyon
*Lake Street Dive - never heard of them before, loved their sound
*Trampled
*Yonder - surprised myself with this one
*Dusters
Though I was a little perturbed at the people sitting during the NG set.
I wish I had been up and dancing with everyone, but a pulled quad kept me sitting in the back. Amazing show. I’m listening to it right now.
Awesome year. For me:
Bela Fleck - Abbey Road in particular
Infamous Stringdusters - ridiculous! Too good.
Steve Martin and the Steeps - fiddle player killed it!
Sam Bush Band
Lake Street Dive -pleasant surprise for me
House Band - goes without saying!
Can’t wait to see you all next year.
Salmon on the main stage was by far my highlight of this year, however, I think that may be because my Telluride hippie make-a-wish came true and I got to experience Telluride from the poser pit!!! AHHHHHHHH!!! Otherwise, did anyone get to check out the Gipsy Moon show at Fly me to the Moon on Sunday night??? WOW!!! Gipsy Moon with Andy Hall, Andy Thorn, Vince Herman, Wally Ingram, and a really good fiddle player that I saw picking in Town Park (???)!! THAT was an amazing show!!! LOVED Hot Rize and as always, Sammy! Also the Salmon show at the Floradora!!! What a great Telluride, I’m already thinking about the possibilities of next year!!!
loved Sam & Chris (“punk”) playing off of each other. Absolute perfection
I know this is subjective and we all have different flavors/opinions, but what was your favorite set of the week?
Top 3 For Me
- Stringdusters(I got straight up Dusted this week) Dust was flyin’ @ the Palm!
- SCI Mainstage(Finally, some mellow, “old school” SCI) Loved the “old school Cheese”
- TBT(MN fellas do good) Awesome @ the SOH too!
Was pleasantly surprised by Dispatch and Elephant Revival.
:thumbsup Agreed, and I thought SCR were great on MainStage and Firstgrass.
HOT RIZE! :thumbsup I’m thrilled they’re writing new stuff!
Stringdusters
Emmylou and Rodney Crowell (I’m a puddle anytime she sings Wheels and then…)
The monks are awesome. I love the mindfulness and joy they bring.
Telluride would not be it without Jerry, Bela and Sam’s presence on that stage. All their sets were great and the house band super fun.
Honorable mention:
Natalie McMaster continues to amaze. Thanks to the Planet for introducing me to her all those years ago.
Elephant Revival
Greensky
Thank you Craig and the other Planet People who work so hard to bring such an incredible experience year after year. This was our 20th consecutive year and you never, ever disappoint. We love you.
Stringdusters
Sam
Greensky
Sarah Jarosz
Elephant Revival
House Band
And how about Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy (and their little 7-yr old) - I saw more people stopping what they were doing and just getting caught up with their set - and the roar that went up at the end of their set was awesome!
What a great week! Now to get some rest and start planning for next year …
Did anyone else catch the String Dusters Show at Elk Park on Sunday? It was originally billed as aBANDoned, with Dave of Greensky and Andy of The String Dusters. Andy mentioned something about Dave having trouble at DIA and couldn’t make it so he brought his infamous friends. It was everyone but Andy Hall and it was probably their best set all weekend.
Yes, by happenstance. First time hearing any of them. Sooooo Excellente!!

In what way(s) was it better than their Nightgrass set? I’m not curios than calling you out – I just don’t see how it could have possibly been better given that Andy Hall was absent and they only had a short (though surely sweet) time slot. I guess it just depends on what you’re looking for – I wanted to see what they could accomplish with a headliner set and the Palm show was just stunning in that light.
After further review, I’m going to reiterate: If the Stringdusters aren’t the best string band in America right now, I’m not sure who is. Go ahead and listen to Magic #9 and tell me it isn’t straight off of Strength in Numbers. Those boys are just festifrigginawesome!
