Dont know how it is everywhere else but folks in Ohio are hoarding things like crazy. Try finding a bottle of rubbing alcohol here. It may be hard to make a new batch of the frog this year. :evil

I’ve been nervous about it for some time. We have big festival here next month with Greensky, Brandi Carlile, Patti Smith, it’s kind of a dream line up and I am super worried that it will be cancelled.

Does anyone realize over 50,000 in the US alone die annually from regular flu strains that we see EVERY Year?
The majority of flu deaths (though all are tragic losses), affect those age 65+.

Is it BS media hype to the families and friends of the 22 people who’ve died in the US?
Sorry but it’s not hype. The flu has a vaccine and we vaccinate the most vulnerable every year which is why we are able to reduce death rates. Covid -19 is a completely novel virus and the entire human population has naive immunity. Of course it will be mild for many but for a lot of people it will be fatal. Even if that’s 1%, that’s 1 in every hundred. This is a devastating threat to humanity. A safe vaccine is at least 18 months away.
I worked in a senior leadership role in govt on SARS and H1N1. I am not hyping it up or spreading misinformation.
This will prove to be a very challenging year for the world, be safe my Festy family.
If you catch the Flu there is no vaccine. There is only a preventative vaccine that in no way is 100% effective. I think what the poster was saying is that only 22 people have died in the US, and during that same period of time 100’s of people died from regular Flu. Both are most deadly in the unhealthy and elderly. The death rate amongst the unhealthy and elderly are nearly identical between the two. Is it an issue, yes, is it a pandemic that needs events shut down, I don’t think so.
We have a verified case in my town, and its business as usual here.
Let’s not have a debate on public health here, this is a place to celebrate music and our community. I have worked as a public health professional and studied and led pandemic planning and disease outbreak, I also managed and led a lot of disease response. I’m not trying to scare people. I will just correct one thing in your post Todd. Vaccination is only a preventative measure. The flu vaccine ( which is changed every year depending on the strains that are circulating) has a very big impact in protecting very vulnerable populations. It doesn’t protect everyone, of course but it keeps a pool of much more vulnerable people much safer. We can’t do this with a novel disease. With flu, after people are diagnosed, we can treat the infection with anti viral medications. We don’t have proven treatments for this disease as yet - the most common life threatening complication is bilateral pneumonia which requires significant intervention. If we can keep the pool of infected people to the smallest possible number we can keep the number of people who need to be in ICU down too.
Meanwhile wash hands, wipe down surfaces, avoid coughing or sneezing on people, stay home if unwell.

I did say Flu Vaccine is preventative. My wife is a Medical Professional, and runs her own clinic. We keep up with the facts. Buckeyeye, I’m not prejudice against any age. The facts are that these infections do have a higher mortality rate with elderly, and I say thats above 75, but also those with already at risk health conditions. I’m not trying to downplay the scenario, but we have enough fears in this world to be overly frightened by a virus that the overwhelming majority are surviving. Love to you all, lets not wallow in fear but celebrate life.
This is not a question of fear. As you say, the facts are that Covid impacts the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions more than the young. It’s a question of risk. You don’t usually live very long if you don’t take risk into account. For example, if your friend just drank a quart of Wild Turkey, would you get into a car that he’s driving? No, you would not, and you’d probably try and get the keys away because he would be a risk to himself, too.
All I know is if Covid gets me, I’m coming back to haunt you all in TP, along with Hippie. :cheers

On top of what you’ve mentioned, I believe the transmission of coronavirus is far more insidious than the “regular flu” in so far as a significant number infected individuals having very mild symptoms intermingling with the general population; whereas an individual with the typical “regular flu” would likely be sidelined and remain in bed.
Not looking to get under anyone’s skin, but I’ve been blown away by how this combined dynamic has been minimized; as if fatalities that are incurred by vulnerable populations are acceptable losses as a trade-off for keeping economies afloat. Not suggesting anyone has explicitly stated something to this effect, but when you think it through, it’s the bottom line of the grand equation.
As much as life in China might not be my cup of tea, I believe they have the right idea in terms of “total lockdown”. Imagine if the entire world were to adopt a similar protocols, we’d likely have the virus contained well before bluegrass and not have what might eventually amount to hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of deaths. And we’re kidding ourselves if we don’t believe something even more potent isn’t around the next corner (however long that might be).
I’m an optimist. We will be seeing everyone this summer. Wash your hands and think positive thoughts. No one benefits from the negative thoughts. Be prepared, and be smart but think positive.

I think you are very close to the mark China is not my idea of a democracy or a place that places a high regard for human rights but they certainly acted swiftly and decisively to contain transmission. The impact can be seen. That said, I expect a second wave of transmission there, it’s almost inevitable. There are now three distinct strains circulating in the world. It’s essential that countries test, test, test. South Korea is testing 10,000 people a day. They know who is ill and they are isolating them. Reducing transmission and reducing the reproduction rate is essential to ensure health services aren’t over run.

I just want to calm everyone’s fears and assure you that Camp Run-A-Muck will have plenty of toilet paper on hand in case of pandemic emergency. Neither rain nor sleet nor snow nor beer virus will hamper us from our sworn festival duties of providing nonsense and the like. Wear your best useless surgical mask (because you ugly!) and let us festivate in the wake of global insanity. But also wash your hands.
