Quick correction: the fifth song is actually called “Moab” …

Also I don’t remember what they played 4th and 16th but I don’t think they played “Eagle on a Pole” twice!

Thanks for all of this legwork, though.

Best!

Thanks for the note, and sorry for a long overdue reply.

The band actually did play two “Eagle on a Pole” songs, though they are different. Perhaps you can clarify. Here are the lyrics to the first song, Track 4:

Saw an eagle on a pole,
I think it was an eagle.
Watched its’ shadow fly 'cross the cement.
And I woke up in the snow,
All the trees, and crowds, and people.
No shirt, no shoes, no idea where they went.

I followed the fenceline thin,
Back where the yard begins
My woman, she stood crying like a man.
Said, where have you been?
Where have you been?
I thought you said that all of that was done.
El Cielo es azul,
Just don’t go telling everyone

Thought the kettle was a train.
Thought that Monday was a doorframe.
Tried so hard to finally settle down.
Heard the fire pop and snap.
Like a tack piano rag.
I never could get used to happy sounds.

Yeah, I hope the world’s exposed.
A cruel and elaborate hoax.
It convinces me to walk without a cane.
But what can you do?
Child, what can you do?
I always heard that what is done is done.
El Cielo es azul,
Just don’t go telling everyone

The past don’t ever quit.
There’s boxes in the attic.
Baby shoes and taxidermy dream.
While the ashes of the dead, like a dandelion head,
Explode and then are scattered by the breeze.
We’re such a long way back to all the fun that we had.
When nothing ever seemed to bother me.
But what can you do?
Brother, what can you do?
Sleep with the stars, and toil in the sun.

El Cielo es azul,
Just don’t go telling everyone
El Cielo es azul,
Just don’t go telling everyone

And here are the lyrics to Track 16:

I saw an eagle on a pole
I think it was an eagle
Now that eagle has flown
And I’ll never know

Could have been a rotten apple
Full of holes
Could have been an open wine bottle
Ready to go
Or it could have been an eagle on a pole

Well the beauty of the seasons
Can rip a man up whole
And what’s happening while you’re sleeping
You will never know

Never trust a truly wayward
Wandering soul
Never trust a wanted woman
Who can’t say no
And you never trust an eagle on a pole

I’ve seen pictures of my face from
Where I swear I did no go
Looked like laughing, looked like stealing
But I will never know

Looked like running, leaving tracks
Through the morning snow
Looked like darness and the light
Going toe to toe
And it looked just like an eagle on a pole

Looooooook Ouuuuuut!
Evil come and there’s nothing left to laugh about
Eden come and we’re crying cause we can’t get out.
Get out! Get out!

Something moving, something floating
Something falling soft and slow
It was getting super natural
But you never know

Getting ready for the girls
At the burlesque show
Getting ready for the night time
Street lights glowing
Get ready for that eagle on a pole

Looooook Ouuuuuut!
Evil come and there’s nothing left to laugh about
Evil come and there’s nothing left to laugh about
Eden come and we’re crying cause we can’t get out.
Get out! Get out!

Don’t you wanna know why?
Why not? Why not?
Don’t you wanna know why?
Why not? Why not?
Don’t you ever trust an eagle on a pole
Don’t you ever trust an eagle on a pole.

How strange-- I’m still not very familiar with what (to me) is a very weak album in Oberst’s Outer South; however, on checking my own math (so to speak), there are actually two songs called “Eagle on a Pole” – very similar lyrically, though not as much musically.

Regarding the lyrics you posted: The former comes from Conor Oberst’s self-titled LP. The latter comes from the Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band LP Outer South.
