Airplanes and Guitar Travel

Hitting up TBF will be first time this new guitarist will be flying with a guitar (Southwest now, but American Airlines down the road)

Anyone have recommendations on check luggage? carry on? gate check? etc?

I have a basic gig bag. Recommend more solid gig bag like a Mono?

Hard case like a Gator TSA approved?

Other?

(yes, I know the “United Breaks Guitars” video… :lol )

Do not check your guitar!!! I’ve flown all over the country and internationally with my guitar in typical hard case. They fit in the overhead bins. They might try and tell you different, but stick to your guns!

what kind of bag/case do you use?

It’s just a standard hardcase, not a fancy plastic one, its particle board and leather outer. I was nervous the first time I did it. But I contacted some of my touring musician friends who fly to a lot of gigs, and they told me its policy to allow musicians to carry on their instruments.

So you are saying my Taylor 810 with its facto4y case will fit in the overhead of a Southwest plane? I’ve never flown with my guitar before, the stories I’ve heard we’re just to scary.

My guitar is a taylor cutaway, with standard factory case, it fits. I’ve seen Cello’s, and Bass’s carried on. And have touring friends that travel with banjo’s cello’s etc… they fit.
