Here’s another, Jayke Orvis and the Broken Band. I just saw them play in Denver on Saturday night and unfortunately according to their facebook page, they got into an accident on Sunday up in the mountains and totaled their bus. Fortunately nobody was badly hurt and assuming that they get their transportation sorted, they would be a good add to the lineup. Does anyone have a bus, shuttle or tour van they might want to loan or sell them? If so, hit them up on their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/JaykeOrvisAndTheBrokenBand
So I saw the Dawg, David Grisman (and his folk jazz trio) at the Dakota here in frozen Minneapolis last night; after the show, asked him when we’d see him at Telluride again, and he gave me a “WTF?” look, that basically said “You tell me!” Said he hasn’t heard from the fest in years.
Let’s bring the Dawg back!! Sounds like he’d be a “new artist” again!
An artist whom richly deserves to play Telluride and Rockygrass: JIM LAUDERDALE!!
The man is the most prolific artist of anyone today, and that is no bull. He released three albums alone last year, and has now six albums in his catalog where all songs were co-written with the great Robert Hunter.
He would add the singer/songwriter edge that frankly I find missing on a number of folk artists that play Planet Bluegrass. Like Steve Earle, pair Jim with a bluegrass band – Tim O’Brien (mando, fiddle), Darrell Scott (any instrument he feels like playing), Dennis Crouch (upright bass) and Scott Vestal (banjo, and whom has played on some of Jim’s albums).
This would be the sleeper set…and a high quality one filled with great songs you’ve never heard.
They’ve been doing the contest the past couple of years and haven’t made the finals to date. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them back in the contest this year. I also think they’re playing better than ever right now. They make it up to Missoula several times a year playing local bars and always have a good performance, but recently they’ve just been getting better and better. Really cool guys, too. I love that some Montana Bluegrass bands have been getting some love on this forum.
I’m sure they had lots of great guest musicians join them. I’ve not seen them yet and would love to get the chance to. It’s been ten years. Bringing them back sometime soon would be fantastic.
Has John Butler Trio or Xavier Rudd ever came to Telluride?? I know JBT was at Folk Fest last year or whenever, and I know either of them would be great here! Great musicians and performers! Give the Aussies some love!
This thread is getting long, so I don’t remember if anyone has brought up the alabama Shakes. They could get everyone up and hopping on a cold Telluride summer evening!
Xavier played in 2004 (I missed that year)
John Butler Trio played in 2005 (I was there - very sweet set).
BC, continuing the Australian artist theme, do you know The Waifs? They played TBF in 2003 and I thought that set (along with their Fly Me to the Moon nightgrass show) was killer. I also saw The Waifs play at the 2010 Folks Fest.
Those girls are so awesome (and then some). :lovedr
