2011 sneak-peek: Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion

[ As we prepare to announce the preliminary 2011 Folks Festival lineup, we wanted to begin introducing you (on the Forum and Facebook) to a few of this year’s artists - especially those performers you might not be familiar with from past Folks Festivals… ]

It feels right to begin with a couple who have the rich history of American music and songwriting in their DNA. Her last name looms large (daughter of Arlo, granddaughter of Woody), but their sweet vocal blend and deep repertoire as dual songwriters more than carries on that family tradition.

Though the Folks Festival goes beyond “folk songs” to the wider wealth of songwriting from around the geographical and musical world, this song captures the spirit of our “summit on the song” wonderfully:

“Everybody 'round this world they make folk songs,
All the people round this planet they’re making folk songs,
Under all the stars and skies they go dance and cry,
And when the rooster crows at dawn they’ll have a folk song…”
