I haven’t lived in the state as long as many of you have been going to the festival, no question. However, when I moved here I was trying to understand the identity of the new place I had chosen to call home.
I hadn’t been to Telluride, I hadn’t even been to Planet Bluegrass…I just knew that there was something special here and that it seemed to permeate everything and everyone around me.
Until one fateful night at the Fillmore…
I had seen this particular band a couple of times back in my home state of Tennessee and had a great time, but it wasn’t until I saw them surrounded by their family that I truly understood what it meant to be a Coloradan.
Unbeknownst to me, I was also experiencing for the first time what it meant to be a Festivarian.
The energy in the room was palatable. The music was a beautifully orchestrated acoustic maelstrom of bliss. I was only beginning to understand why the fish loved the maelstrom, I only had to ask…
It was after that night that I truly understood what the Colorado music community was. A group of people that loved being together. The musicians and the fans. Everyone was there for each others company, and music was the common element.
That, to me, is what the Telluride Bluegrass Festival is all about. One big happy family, pickin’ and grinnin’…organized chaos. All things our next band has…and you love.
