Ha ha, I see we’re on the same wave length
I think I’d faint of sheer happiness if this happened…
Any other magical band formations anyone can think of that they’d like to see back on stage?
I’d vote for Livewire, with one of my favorite banjo players: Scott Vestal
Can’t recall the names of the rest of the band, but their only released album (as far as I know) “wired” is probably my favorite bluegrass album ever!
Here! Here! Auntie. Didn’t realize she was an AK fan. TP is the only place for this gal in her first year and any after. Have a feeling she has the voice to join in on some of the jams. Get Lalagay a ticket, please! Do like her style.
Jailhouse Rob
Tony Rice & Alison Krauss… I’ve been kicking myself ever since the day I realised I was missing out on this tour It’s pretty much my most cherished dream that they’ll do it again…
I can’t believe Tony can’t sing anymore! I grew up listening to albums like Manzanita, Church Street Blues or Cold on your Shoulder and I just loved his voice…I only discovered from recent footage the situation and it really broke my heart to think that I’d never see him perform in all his glory…
But hearing Alison sing songs like Early Morning Rain along to his guitar… now that’s a sight I’d like to see!
Now that’s got me started on male vocalists! Here’s my top favorites:
Tim O’Brien
Alan O’Bryant
Marshall Wilborn
Harley Allen
Dan Tyminski
Lead Third Tyme Out singer…what’s his name?!?
Lead Livewire singer ?!?
Paul Adkins (anyone remember “Reflections of Love”?)
and the list goes on…
Well I don’t want to rub it in Lalagay but the TRAKUS show was quite amazing. I had the opportunity of seeing it in Atlanta and Merlefest. It is still the best show I’ve ever seen. When just AK and Tony performed “Streets of London” I almost lost it. So beautiful. It is quite a shame Tony can’t sing anymore, he had my favorite voice in bluegrass or just period. Since it’s Jerry’s 25 this year at Telluride, and Tony has be so influential to him, maybe there will be a surprise appearance. Hey I can dream can’t I?
Go to the site Paul Rennix | Paul Rennix – Personal Site and find the TRiceAKUS2007-6-23 folder and download it. It’s probably my most listened to set from that year.
As for my favorite vocalists…
Tim O’Brien
Luke Bulla
Sam Bush
Drew Emmitt
John Cowan
Darrell Scott
Oh man… well you are rubbing it in aren’t you!
TRAKUS, now that is hilarious! me & my dad think these abbreviations are sooo funny, there like, total bluegrass geeky, who would of thought that existed eh? Ooops, I might be one myself actually… :lol
You actually saw it twice?!? Wow you are sooooo lucky… that tour didn’t make it across the Atlantic sadly…I think I would have been crying my eyes out if I’d seen that…It’s so good you can’t believe it’s happening, it’s almost too much… well that’s how I felt and I didn’t even get to see them!
Tony on stage with Jerry at Telluride?!? I’ll second that! it would be incredible!!! What I love about Jerry is his style totally sparks off whoever he’s playing with, and I particularly like what Tony brings out in him, some of my favorite JD breaks are on TR albums so…
I say me make that dream come true!
It’s nice to know you can still count on some things remaining the same. :cheers
I have a standing date with Sammy, Tim , Bela, Jerry etc. This is my point of reference for the entire summer… :cheers
Why of course! I’m always happy to and generally terribly chatty & over enthusiastic when it comes to talking about music in general, bluegrass in particular
What kind of knowledge are you looking for exactly?
That I’m afraid is totally up to personal taste ! It depends what you listen to generally :rock, pop, folk, jazz, blues, soul, classical…
Bluegrass has a bit of all that in it, and each individual artist has chosen to bring out more of one or several of these in their particular style of bluegrass:
Tim O’Brien’s fairly recent career has a lot to do with his exploration of the Celtic & Irish roots of bluegrass music
Tony Rice’s style of guitar playing brings out the blues in bluegrass I think
Bela Fleck’s banjo is highly experimental, skillful and close to jazz in many ways
Alison Krauss recent career has veered towards more mainstream, popular music
Chris Thile’s mandolin is in the bit in the same vein as Bela’s banjo, but with classical music influences as well
Third Time Out (if they still exist as a band, I don’t know) is very much the gospel roots of bluegrass
Peter Rowan carries with him quite a big folk & 60’s hippie’s music (he had a band, Old & In The Way, with David Grisman and Jerry Garcia , the late lead guitarist of the grateful dead) tradition
The Del McCoury Band are a good example of modern day bluegrass quite close to Bill Monroe’s original style
The New Grass Revival were pioneers in the broadening of bluegrass towards the music of their generation, rock, blues, jazz, experimental…
I hope this is a bit of useful insight
This is a great free online radio station that plays the music you tell it what you want to hear. I designed a channel around Yonder Mountain String Band and it is constantly playin some Sam Bush and Tim Obrien as well as Del McCrory, Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs and many others
www.bluegrass.com
Yep this very site’s jukebox is a great little player
http://thespps.org/
This is a great site as well with a streaming player as well as a wealth of downloads
:wave IMHO
Start with a Bill Monroe anthology and a bit of Jimmy Martin
Get a copy of Steam powered aereoplane - John Hartford
Add a dose of Old and in the way
A quick dash of Acoustic Jerry Garcia
Finish with the excellent New Grass Revival Live in France
Then yu can can start branching out from there, there are many roads to go, and they go by many names, they don’t all go the same way, but they get there just the same.
