The String Cheese Incident to return to TBGF???

At the risk of being pelted by things…I’ve never heard of the String Cheese Incident. I don’t think they would be as big of a draw as ya’ll are thinking.

Fair enough. I was pretty psyched for that show as well, but ended up sleeping through it (I believe I was dehydrated, but that night is a little foggy), so I can’t really speak to that performance. Next time they come to Telluride, I’d recommend giving them another listen if at all possible. I imagine catching all the artists becomes much more difficult when you start bringing the little ones, and there will probably be many other artists you’d rather see. Give them a listen from up at Run a Muck if you can.

Here’s a show from this past summer from Flagstaff … it’s a fairly varied setlist, so I guess it might give you an idea of some of the different directions they may take things.

… Stanley Jordan sat in for a lot of this show, which I thought was awesome (in particular on Impressions & RIMSBA as a bluegrass tune). They’re sit in friendly, and would be psyched to see someone such as Peter Rowan collaborate on stage (Sweet Melinda, Walls of Time, etc.) … kind of funny hearing the “I’m so embarrased” of what they’ve become … since PR seemed to be one to smooth things over for them at more traditional bluegrass festivals way back when.

if so i hope they do a throwback bluegrass set and not their strungout cheesey accident of the past decade.

We were at the Flagstaff SCI show. It was anything but boring. Stanley Jordan was incredible. I hope the rumor is true and that they do end up at the 40th TBF!

Here’s a good set from SCI in Nashville last year. Very heavy on the bluegrass, as Sam Bush sat in for almost the entirety of the first set. If we’re lucky enough to be graced by their presence this festival, then I would imagine their set would look/sound like this.

On RRE - my favorite band (with Greensky/String Cheese), but agreed that their TBF mainstage performance a couple years ago was slower. If you’re not into them that much, a 7 Story Mtn on the setlist for a 90 minutes set could make/break it for you. However, they did kill it at the Sheridan for their nightgrass & I’ve loved them every other time I’ve seen them. Your milage may vary.

Either way, I’m anxiously awaiting the announcement with the rest of you.

I enjoyed the Flagstaff show a lot. Who knows, maybe Stanley Jordan would sit in as it’s not far from Northern AZ and he’s been doing a lot of it. That tour is a good place to look for recent examples of good to great. Flagstaff is also a great example of a small crowd (3000 capacity). No problems at all.

If it happens, I can’t wait. It’ll be a highlight for me. FWIW, Sam Bush also sat in during Horning’s last year. I really hope this happens.

I’ve listened to RRE a lot and I can think of many examples of albums and sets I’ve enjoyed very much but 2 years ago was a snoozer to the max. I was pretty disappointed and had the clear thought “they blew it” (main stage TBF opportunity). By no means was it a “fire” set. I heard Sheridan was much better than main stage.

I’ll take anyone’s extras if Cheese is there and you don’t wanna be :lol

I’m excited for anything that PBG books…they’ve opened my eyes to lots of acts that I would say when I see their names on a lineup…meh. But when you get down to it, Planet Bluegrass knows what they are doing. So Cheese or no Cheese, I’m pumped for the 40th!

I’d love to see SCI, since that’s one band I’ve never had a chance to see live. Wooks…meh, will be wooks. Any band we like could bring a few along with them, and it won’t be any worse than any other year we’ve seen a big name on the bill.

That said, RRE is one of my (and Mrs. Pilgrim’s, and both little Pilgrims’) favorites. A band we would willingly travel to see if they are anywhere near NE Ohio. A mellow set is something we’ve seen before (followed by more of a rager for a second set). Given the relatively shorter main stage set times, it’s too bad RRE wasn’t as satisfying for everyone, but we loved it all the same.

Finally, GREENSKY, please! :thumbsup

That first set is hard to argue with, for sure; real fun, and I like that it’s acoustic. That said, it seems like what I particularly like about it is not necessarily SCI … the songs I’m most impressed with don’t seem to showcase actual members of SCI, nor are they SCI songs, for example. I’ll keep listening and trying out the suggestions here!

it seems fitting to me since i havent been to TBGF in 15 years and I haven’t seen a fest without SCI.

Those days were so fun of course they will be there. No Brainer.

oh please no cheese. i had friends that saw them at warren haynes christmas jam and said it was just horrible. i didn’t believe them and watched the show myself. it was horrible. why would tbf want a confused band that doesnt know what kind of music it wants to play: electronica like sound tribe or bluegrass like billy wants to play. and in case anybody thinks im an sci hater i am not. i saw my first cheese show in 1996 on the tbf mainstage and was blown away. i met my wife at a cheese festival, hornings hideout, in 2004 and did two straight years of cheese tour. so i love me some cheese, just not the sci that has played the last few years. they are a band in an identity crisis and have been for years. ever since they played with sound tribe at hornings that year they have been confused on what kind of music they want to play. billy wants to play bluegrass, kang and travis want to rock out on electronica, kyle just wants to play his keyboard. and i havent seen them since they added jason, so can’t really comment on what his deal is. it seems like they play sci shows now to pay their bills, not for the love and passion of playing music. but i will say that cheese fans are some of the kindest people around, if they did play tbf they would be the last fans anybody would have to worry about. but the beautiful thing about a festival is there is music for everybody, and sci might totally blow the festival away, with a bluegrass set.

Thanks for the link to the tunes
:cheers

I think a Cheese “TBA” Festival Set with a Nightgrass show announced at the Fest would be perfect. Solves everyone’s problems, except me since I can’t go this year. I blame PB for booking great bands when I can’t come! :lol

SCI wouldnt be my first choice for " big announcement "…but they wouldnt be my last either…I enjoy the jazzier side of them but have to admit…havent listened to them in the past couple of years. As for them bringing unruly fans to TBF…Dont see that happening.

In retrospect, I am now wondering where this “rumor” originated. Not saying it’s not feasible or viable, but the same person seems to be suggesting it’s a rumor without source, and I’m not sure there’s any more credence to this than any other rumor that’s logical.

Sparked quite a discussion, though, whether or not legit.

rumors about which bands are tba’s are fun and the only rumors that don’t hurt anybody. And in retrospect I think sci would be fun with a sam and peter sit in. but hey, some people actually think they have inside info because their bro told them so.

I think that “reality catalyst” might be a better description than “rumor.” The “source” of this rumor, who then created a thread about the open rumor, should probably have their festivarians cut off and placed in a jar, so that we may all restore our faith in the sanctity of blog threads about potential additions to music festivals. On a more serious note, I was saddened to hear that SCI just disbanded over incessant questions about TBF.

For those of you worried about the SCI riff raff,.

I just got a text from my buddy in boulder who seems to get these things right and was told by someone who is def a player in the CO music scene, that one of the bands not announced will def blow your minds.

I am not going to believe this till i see it, simply because they have no history with the fest, but they do have a big history with the town, and its a big year for the band.

And they will bring some phreaks to town no doubt.

Anyway you shake it, i am so glad to be going back to my favorite fest, its been way too long.

no way, 7beatspersec. quit teasin’!
