Once festival starts, the vendors offer a large variety of and excellent food… You could consider pre-making food at home and reheating… We do this for boy scout camping… FREEZE in ziplocs and just reheat… Some favorites: pasta and sauce, burrito stuffings, pulled pork etc… There are always the easy camp foods like quesadillas, grilled cheese, omelettes made in baggies etc… Fondue pots w/ sterno can make easy chocolate fondue for fruit or use for cheese w/ french bread or nacho cheese etc…
Hi there. We have two daughters, 6 and 3. We are camping at Warner Field, and we’re going to have our own little kids’ camp at our campsite. We’re bringing some arts and crafts, lots of games, and lots of bubbles. We went last year for the first time, and had a blast at the Festival. The fishing pond for little kids is great (adjacent to the Festival grounds), the playground and city swimming pool are fantastic (also adjacent to the Festival grounds) and the Telluride Public Library is amazing!!! I’ve never seen another library like it in my life.
Please cruise over to Warner Field and look for us. We’ll try to have some kind of windsock at our site, but just keep an eye out for a large campsite with tons of young kid toys and a bicycle trailer (which we use for trucking the kids back and forth around town). Have fun!!!
P.S. Where are you coming from? We are from Ventura, CA.
Your husband is right. Haha. I’ve only been camping a few times myself, and my husband’s been the one to deal with the food since he’s been camping all of his life. It is tough with the kids running around. But I think it’ll be a little less worrisome being on a HS field. We were in the woods, and we were always worried of the kids running into strange bushes or finding nasty trash/glass left behind by previous campers.
Also, my son is allergic to dairy, wheat, soy, eggs, and nuts, so I can relate to you there. He pretty much eats rice-based foods and meat. That is another challenge for us.
Laura, We will be arriving at the high school around 1pm on Wednesday. My son is 7, my daughter is 5 and the wee one is almost 2. How old are yours? I’ll be the short one looking frazzled. Ha! Looking forward to meeting. . .
Interesting about your son. . .we can trade war stories. Can’t imagine it’s easy to have a kid deal with that. I have a hard enough time as an adult. As for food for me, it might be a cukes, jicama, rice cake w/almond butter diet, but I am going to make some chicken Kofta meatballs and try to bring them frozen for a treat.
From reading the posts all over it seems I need to pack the kids warmer clothing. Feeling like such a novice but all will be well once we’re in the mountains listening to Cabbage Town on Thursday night.-Heather
We’re staying in Gallup, NM Tues night, and will be trying to get to Telluride ASAP Wed morning. I hope there will still be good spots left! My daughter is 5, as well! She was happy to hear about your daughter. My son will be 18 mos, so kind of close to your little one. I, too, will be the short one looking frazzled. Haha. We’ll figure out a way to find each other.
And it sounds like it’s going to be rainy. Or at least is has been. On weather.com, it shows rain until the 12th and the 13th is sunny. Let’s cross our fingers!! I am sort of freaking out about packing our clothes. I feel like we’ll be bringing our entire closets. I’m sure it won’t be so bad once I get started though.
So can you really get a bad spot for camping at the HS? Do we need to get there earlier on Wednesday? I saw on the Twitter update that the HS is almost sold out. . .
Do families mostly backpack the toddlers or “leash” them? We’re backpacking but my family suggested “leashing”. All my wee one wants to do it run and I’m afraid of losing her.
I didn’t know they were on twitter!! Thanks for the info.
Not sure about getting there earlier on Wed. I usually underestimate the number of people who get to events early, so I want to try to get there asap. I have a feeling there will be a huge line of cars waiting to get in, so the sooner you’re there, the better.
We have a backpack, but I’m not sure if my son will fit in it. I never really thought of leashing him. I figured that I would just have a stroller. ??
We will be keeping my 18mo in a backpack or sling… but you can’t do that ALL day!
I refuse to “leash” him on principle… but I did just purchase some temp. tattoos that I can write our cell phone number on… just in case… www.safetytat.com
I’m sure you can do the same thing by just writing directly on their skin… or on a piece of tape on the back of a shirt… Never write the kids name… just “if lost please call XXX-XXX-XXXX”
or come find me in coonskin rv camping on Thursday AM and I’ll give you one We are not getting into T-Ride until late Wednesday night…
I was seriously thinking about getting some of those safetytats esp. since my son has allergies, and they have specific tats for that. I read about them in an earlier post. But I think I’ll just DIY it. They are pretty cool though! :thumbsup
I’ll have my almost 13 month old in a backpack as much as she’s willing to stay in it. I’m not too worried about her getting too far away. I’d love for her to get some child interaction. I’m such a young mommy that my friends don’t have babies so she doesn’t get a lot of interaction. Hopefully all of the tiny kidlets will get to play. And make funny noises at each other. And make life long friendships.
I can totally relate to that! None of my friends had babies yet (and still don’t) when I had my daughter, so she didn’t get much baby interaction either. My daughter is 5 now and is still super shy, but she’s doing a lot better. My son, however, is Mr. Social. He waves to EVERYONE, and seems to WANT to make friends. My daughter was the complete opposite. So, I’m very excited that there will be so many young kids at the Fest!! My son will LOVE it! And my daughter will have to deal with it. Haha. :lol
haha, how old is your son? My daughter has her social moments where she waves to everyone or her bashful ones where she clings onto me. Hopefully she’ll be social at the festival.
Awww. I’ve been saying that every two months or so about my daughters ages. She’s almost 13 months. Maybe they can be baby festiboyfriend and girlfriend? Where are you camping? We’ll be at Ilium.
Haha! That would be cute!! We’re at the high school campground though. We’ll have to meet up sometime though. I think I read somewhere that you love the Chris Thile? Am I wrong? Well, we LOVE him, too. We should do the tarp run that day together and get close enough to have his mandolin genius drip off on us. :lol
